    HI Guys,
Has anyone attempted to install a subwoofer in a 2003 A4. I just got the car and I love it. I replaced the stereo with an Alpine CD/Ipod control unit, it was easy, now I want to upgrade the sub.

    Hi,

    I take it youve got a B6 A4.

Ive put several in my A4. ive down two now in the spare wheel well. for the average listener who just wants a reasonalbe amount of bass, go with a single sub install. the first one i did, i inverted my spare wheel and builda fibreglass mould to fit inside. (see Pic 001, thats a 12" Infinity sub).
If your after a lot of bass, and still want some boot space, then go with 2x 12" subs. (see pic 026, these are 2x 12" alpine tyre R's and they are very loud!) you do loose the use spare wheel though, but a few cans of holts tyre weld are the next best thing.

Just a few idea's for you anyway.

    Hi a4audio

I'm seriously considering on doing the spare wheel sub install as a DIY project but I'm not sure that I'll get stuck into something I can't finish. Where did you get your install done?

Plan B will be to build a sealed box measuring 27"W x 8"H x 16"D to fit up against the seat back under the hood mechanism (I have a cabrio). Sub will fire upwards

Any tips would be appreciated - thanks

    Hi,

the whole install was done by myself, in several stages. the original single 12" sub inside the wheel was made using fibreglass. i basically took a mould of the bottom of the boot, and then a mould of the inside of the wheel and joined them up. about 5 layers later you get a very solid box. This particular box is actually sitting in my garage now waiting to go on ebay as ive got the twin 12" subs in there now. (Let me know if your interested) To be honest ive done a few fibreglass projects now, and they are relativly simple. i think i spent about £80 in total on the single sub box, including the carpet.
The new twin box took about a month to make, doing little bits every night or so. still, im pleased with the way it turned out and sounds.

Hi A4audio - was just looking at your sub install. Im thinking of similiar for my S4 cabriolet but wasnt sureif you would get a good sound in the car with subs in the boot due to the compartemnt where the roof is stored. Does it sound good in the car?

Both the single 'wheel sub' and the twin subs sound great. You dont need to have the ski hatch open as the low frequencies pass through the car very well.
You do get a slightly louder, crisper bass response between 70 and 100Hz at low volume, with the hatch open (or in my case removed), but to be honest, unless you keep opening and closing it compairing the very small difference, it sounds great either way.
If your still worried about this, then just lower the crossover frequency of the sub, and your main speakers. A good set of 16.5cm's or even the stock front door speakers will fill in the gap between the mids and where the sub kicks in.
