How do I know if the servicing is fixed or variable?? Car is a 2000 Xreg 115PD 6 speed & it's due a service in 800 miles. Is Mobil 5w30 or Castrol Edge 5w30 the right type of oil?? Thanks.

Give the dealer who has serviced the car a call and they should be able to tell you what service pattern its on. As for the oil, there is a specific oil for the PD engines. It important you use this oil otherwise the engine may suffer. Again speak to your dealer and they will tell you about the oil.

Thanks but it hasn't been dealer serviced for a while, so they probably wouldn't know.

In that case put it on time and distance (service every year or 10000miles) but do get the PD spec oil.

If your car has a fixed sevice it will have 'QG0' or 'QG2' on a sticker in the service booklet, drivers door pillar or underneath the boot carpet. If it has QG1 then it is Longlife, the sticker has lots of numbers so you will have to look closely!

Mine has QG1 on the sticker so obviously my car from new was on longlife servicing, but the second owner didn't do as many miles so it got converted to fixed servicing so you really can't go with the sticker info as the service schedule may of changed...

Thanks for confusing me even more!! LOL. I think I'll just service it every 7-8000 mile regardless.

Thats your best bet. You can't go wrong then.
VW launched the longlife servicing for fleet companies and company car drivers. Trouble is when the cars get sold on to the likes of you and me who do 6-10k miles a year the longlife servicing doesn't really work.

You say the service is due in 800 miles, well, before then, when was it last serviced?

There are fixed 10k service intervals and 'variable servicing' which is longer, say about 20-25k. However I don't recommend this.

I use Shell oil rather than Castrol, you can use Shell's online LubeMatch tool here to find which oil is correct for your vehicle.

The Shell oil will be designed for 10k service intervals. I've used Shell oil in both my Audi A6 and my VW Transporter T5, and all is good.

    Hope this helps

Yep, last serviced 10K ago but about 17 months. I've just given it the full treatment, with air, fuel, pollen filters as well. Used Castrol 5w30 & will change every year (about 7-8000 miles). It rewarded my service by blowing the OS steering rack seal out & dumping all it's oil over the driveway - nice!!
