    HI folks,

I'm so glad there's a discussion forum for this! Please can anyone help..

I bought a mark 4 golf, 2002 1.9 GT TDI about 2 weeks ago. It runs fine, has 46k miles on the clock. But the problem is the heated seats dont work, air con doesnt blow cold air and the car antenna doesnt have any reception!

For those who have had these issues, please can you help? I'm hoping for the heated seats its just a case of a connection somewhere that needs fixing? I checked the fuse box and all is fine (the schematic for the fuses along with the manual are the most useless set of instructions I have ever seen!).

The car antenna was working perfectly fine with the old system when I bought it, but when I installed my new cd player, the fuse blew for the radio, which i fixed but after that the radio reception has gone to zero. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I've connected the amplifed antenna as instructed (blue wire going into the 12v feed from stereo).. does the antenna adaptor have its own internal fuse that could have gone?

And for the air con.. I really hope its not the compressor.. can anyone tell me how to check under the bonnet for levels of coolant/gas? I have no idea

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    Hi
I had a problem with one of my seats no longer heating ,I did some research and found that its quite common for the fine heating wire to snap in the seats, in my case my wife commented that the seat had got very hot in one place then had stopped working.
Each seat is controlled by its own control module on the dash board, I managed to pop these out and gain access to the connectors the plug into.
I found the pin outs below, assuming you have a Multimeter and you are confident with car electrics you can check that there is a low resistance across the seat heater. In my case it was open circuit.
I took the cover off the seat, inspected the heating element and found a small burn mark in the material that holds the fine heating wire to the seat. It seems that over time sitting in the seats causes the wires to fracture and they become high resistance and burn out. I peeled a bit on the wire out soldered it and used some heatshrink for a professional but very fiddly repair.

As both of your seats have stopped working, this may be the cause or it could be power not reaching the controllers ?
    Hope this helps

    Pin outs
The power for the seat control module, illumination, and seat heat comes to the drivers side and is split from there to the passenger side. Wire colors are the same on both switches.
Pin 1 (Grey/Blue) From Instrument Panel Dimmer Switch and to passenger pin 1.
Pin 2 (Black/Yellow) To Seat Heater
Pin 3 (Black/White) From Seat Heater Temp Sensor
Pin 4 (Red/Grey) From Heated Seat Fuse 44 and to passenger side pin 4.
Pin 5 (Black/Blue) From Climate Control Fuse 5 and to passenger pin 5.
    Pin 6 (Brown) Ground

Any advice given is meant to be helpful and in good spirit. No liability is accepted for loss , damage or injury. WORK SAFELY

I really appreciate your advice - will give it a go. Really frustrating as it means that there as a quality issue with the design..

How difficult is it to remove the seat cover? I'm not sure I'll be able to figure out how to get to the heater inside the seat... any tips?

    thanks again

    Hi
I looked back through my links and found the source of the solution I used see:
    http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3481034

Also do a search on that forum for heated seats, make sure the search is focused on the Golf MK4 and you click the archived box.

    Hope this helps
