semi or fully synthetic?

Hi all


I have a mk 4 gttdi vw golf with 64 k on the clock on an 03plate. the last time it was serviced my mechanic put semi synthetic oil in it. was this the correct oil for this engine or should it have fully synthetic instead. The car has been remapped by jabbasport so it now develops 195 Bhp so should i change to fully synthetic as there is extra strain on the engine.

P.s the remap is excellant but the standard clutch is slipping 1 year later so i will be visiting jabba again for the performance clutch. ;-)

mayb too late for this, but if its a TDI wiv a PD engine u shud only use PD oil!!! which is FULLY synthetic! If you dont , you can f*ck ur injectors

Replace it ASAP or you will do a lot of dammage to the camshafts ! Use min oil that meets 505.01 VW spec or fully synthetic oil that meets the 507 VW spec. You can get Castrol EDGE 5w30 fully syn. 507 oil for longlife service intervals for £45 at local Halfords...

maybe too late for this, but if its a TDI with a PD engine you should only use PD oil!!! which is FULLY synthetic! If you don't , you can damage your injectors

Why would using the wrong grade of oil cause damage to injectors? Surely it's diesel which would be going through the injectors. Am I missing something about injectors needing lubrication?

To be honest mate... im not too sure. I say this because i used to have a seat ibiza 130 PD (same as golf + Bora) and when i bought oil for that, the guy sed if u dont use PD then u will damage the injectors and i remember him sayin to replace all 4 was worth more than the car!! lol

I could be wrong, but thats what he sed.... SEAT PENTRAETH ... north wales!

Anyway, one thing for sure is that using none PD oil in a PD is a road to disaster !

As kenney said, the camshaft is pushing the injectors so the contact surface on the cam lobes is put under extreme pressure wich conventional oils cannot protect. The fully synthetic PD oils resist to immense pressures and heat without breaking down the chain of mollecules as with conventional mineral/semi-synthetic oils ! Its the thin film of oil wich minimise the friction between the moving parts and the massive wear occurs on start-up before the oil can flow trough the engine...then convenional/cheap oils tend to break down/sludge under high temperature and pressure ! Also the turbocharger is working harder on a PD engine and needs propper lubrication. Mineral/semi-syn oils will bake onto the hot side of the turbo and will block the flow to the impeller also it will block the oil pump pick-up as well. If you ever seen a sludged up 1.8T engine after it failed you will know what i am talking about. Synthetic oils also have powerfull detergents and aditives to help protect the engine against wear and tear...
