    Hello all,

I've now had the Multitronic replaced on the A4 - hurrah - god knows what it cost Audi Warranty peeps, but they didn't give me any paperwork and the cs folks at the dealers said it was "reassuringly expensive" (they suggested over £5500!!)

It's totally different now, still does some of the odd things so I guess that means it's perfectly normal - but all the other issues are solved - smooth, quick to respond - like a totally different car.

The thing I've noticed though is before we had very little smoke under acceleration even when hard. Now we seem to have a lovely grey waft behind us when you do anything heavier than a gentle prod on the "go faster" pedal.

Has anyone else experienced the changed box making differences like this? Hope to god it not another issue....it's going back in a week or two for servicing anyway and will still be just under warranty, but I'm fed up with suprises....

    Cheers,
    Dan.

I'm unsure about the smoke, might just need a good drive if it has been stood for a while during repairs?

With all these threads about auto-box problems I am so glad I went for the manual box option!!

T'was only "unused" for 24 hours....I can't drive a manual any distance anymore owing to a stuffed knee - but now it's been replaced if it stuffs in the next 2 years it's replaced FoC anyway

    Hurrah!

Is it a diesel? I'm assuming mileage is under 60k for you to still be in warranty.

Audi diesels have a nasty habit of the turbo getting a bit gummed up if driven gently all the time. Having a multitronic just adds to the problem, because it is imposible to thrash the engine in full auto mode.

I suggest you try giving it a bit of a thrash with the gearbox in manual mode. It will always change up as soon as you hit high revs, but just use the stick to drop down to the lowest gear it will tolerate and keep the revs as high as possible. It sounds a bit unsympathetic, but it might blow the cobwebs off. If it is still smoking after that, it's time for the dealer to take a look.

I've done 400 miles since yesterday morning and have put it into manual where possible. Have to say the new gearbox is a lot of fun Anyway in manual, foot to the floor I can't say I can see any smoke other than the odd tiny bit. It seems to be that flooring it in "auto" mode makes the smoke....wonder what's going on.....

It's down to 1300 to the service now and will get another 400 miles on it this week yet perhaps more so will be under the magic 1k next week and we can book it in for the week after so we'll have time to debug all the issues before the Audi warranty expires....

Thx for advice, and for showing me what the "manual" mode is like now :-)

    Cheers,
    Dan.
