    Hi All, Newbie here. Have a 2000 passat tdi 90bhp and recently very low on power. Read a few threads here - suspected the MAF sensor. I changed this - got one on ebay - exact same part number. Suddenly I had lots of power but something not right. There is some hesitation on acceleration and then a surge of power. But biggest problem is lots and lots of black smoke and poor mpg since. Any ideas!

    Egr Valve Would Be A Good One To Look Into Especially If Its Burning Oil ------or Turb Might Be Clogged Up With Dirt

    my passat 2002 130bhp did the same it turned out it was a hole in a pipe that feeds the turbo cost £70 at independant vw garage but it was like a new car after.hope this helps

    Hi, I've had the same problem maf was on its way out so got one off ebay, got it fixed on the car and smoked everyone behind me.I fitted the old one back on and no black smoke so its boxed up and being returned, now I will buy a vw one not a cheap one , they are crap and not worth the hassel.Hope you get it sorted. Vivfazer.

    as has been suggested above, this MAF you got off ebay, is it an official one, or a cheap replica. there are a lot of people selling poor imitations, it should be a proper bosch unit you fit ideally, i know their expensive, but its cheaper than pooping up your car ....

    Thanks for the last two replies. I borrowed a pals MAF and installed it this morning - no smoke and car runs like a dream. Problem solved. Thanks again - great site.
