    Hi everyone
I've got an Audi A4 2.0 FSI, 2004. I took it on a trip through Europe and it gave me quite a lot of trouble. The engine was going off whilst I was driving, with the EPC warning light on. After a short brake on the roadside it would start but felt less powerful and acceleration was not good at all. It would go for a couple of miles and it would go off again, same amber EPC light would come on. I took it to an VW/Audi dealer in Bulgaria, they hooked on to a VAG computer, it was reading sporadic low pressure in the fuel system. They replaced some kind of valve and the fuel filter and said it was ok, so I carried on with the trip. The problem still occurred, so i took it to a VW/Audi garage in Macedonia. Their computer did not find any errors. They took out the new fuel filter and said it was blocked. I said it had just been replaced so they said that it is probably dirt in the fuel tank(???) so they took it out and cleaned it + the fuel pump. They said the fuel pump was tired becase it had been working with all the dirt going through, but they said I should wait 15 days for the delivery, so I went on my way back here. Same thing kept happening on the way back, especially if the weather was hot. I noticed that the fuel tank was getting quite hot and when the engine was going off could not hear the fuel pump working. After a while it would work, but much noisier than normal. I noticed that if I kept topping up the tank with cool fuel would help a lot. It did not happen when weather was cooler. At Calais I noticed some white smoke coming out of the exhaust when idling. Also when started, the engine would sometimes rev up to 900 rpm(normal idling rpm), then it would rev down and would either halt or spring back into normal idling rpm. I came back home and got the fuel pump replaced here in the UK. It is better now but I still get white smoke coming out of the exhaust and it still struggles at start. Also I have always got that metallic diesel-like ding-ding-ding sound from the engine, but everyone says it is normal for FSI engines(???). The car has been serviced according to manufacturer's instructions and on time, apart from that fuel filter, it was the original fuel filter the car had been bought with, I do not know why it has never been checked by the "experts" at Audi dealers.
    Could someone please help?
    Many Thanks

    Hello,

Not had any of these problems, but my belt tensioner does seem a little noisey, sounds a bit like a diesel at idling, but quiet at other speeds, asked garage on service they said seems to be working fine, is this just a quirk with this model?

yeah that seems about right, bri, sound comes from where the belt tensioner is, and is not heard at other engine speed apart from idling thanks for confirming that

    Is it using any water?

When was the last fault code was read done and were there any codes?

For the top end of the engine to sound quite metallically is perfectly normal for an FSI.

I have a similar noise from my FSI engine and have been told it is perfectly normal. Also sounds a little like a diesel on start-up

When you say your engine would 'cut off', do you mean stall?

No it does not use much water, Crasher. And yeah, it does stall, and the amber EPC light comes on, neo283. Thanks for your reply guys.
