    Hi all,

Just took motor to nationwide for an alternator. £310.

So I have got the existing model number 028 903 031 but on the bay the only ones listed with exact model number are in the region of £90 2nd hand. I was wondering if anyone could suggest an alternative as I am sure there will be lots of compatable models out there. thanks.

oh and are they easy enough to change for a novice - I am not stupid and have some tools but not very experienced under the bonnet happy to have a go though. Everything looks accesable and the location seems very good for a swapout but some pointers would be superb

I have tried gsf and it is £175, I am after a secind hand one cheaper than £85 - the only way I can get this is if I am aware of other models of alternator that would fit.

A second hand one is a waste of money. The one way clutch pulley is worth more then a second hand one. Regards Peter

Be very careful buying off fleaBay here (well in general actually, if I had a tenner for every time someone calls me with “I have just bought X off fleaBay and …), the alternator 028 903 031 has been superseded to 038 903 018 Q and a separate free wheel pulley 038 903 119 D. From Audi they cost a whopping £502 for the pair. To assemble the two you need a special clutch tool and after that they are time consuming but easy to do.

These numbers also supersede to the same two part number so should be compatible

    038 903 018 B
    038 903 018 Q
    038 903 024 F
    021 903 025 K
    021 903 025 T
    074 903 025 J
    074 903 025 Q
    028 903 026 H
    028 903 028 E
    028 903 029 B
    028 903 031

Why do you need a new alternator? They are very reliable and problems are usually confined to the replaceable one way clutch.

thanks, just what I was after.

    This ius what happened...
    Battery light on dash.

Day 1-4 voltage indicator at 11.5v (on dash) always nomrally 14v.
Day 5 - stupid me tops up battery with 2.5litres of top up water (don't laugh)
Day 6-7 volatge stays same at 11.5
Day 8 car starts fine but then volatge drops to very low level, lights don't work, abs stops working. Managed to hobble to nationwide and they tell me the alternator is only putting out 12v and it should be 14v.

I call audi and the tech sugests it is probably just the battery.

I told nationwide to just replace the battery.

Drove home and battery light is still on and voltage is still at 11.5v

couple of further questions if you can spare the time...

q1, all the other part numbers you mentioned - would they all need the sperate pulley?
q2, what is the replaceable one way clutch, is it expensive and what would the part number be?

call me suspicious but every time I take my car to a garage I think I am getting ripped off. I used to take it to a garage 30mins away and felt I could trust them but they emigrated

They probably emigrated as they felt persecuted living in this God forsaken wee hole of a country ruled by numpties and filed with pathetic and chavy BMW driving morons.

The list of alternators I have quoted is that provided by ETKA 7.1 and is those alternators replaced by the one your car uses so all those should be interchangeable.

The one way clutch is just what it sounds like, the pulley will only power the alternator one way and that would sound logical but the four pulses per revolution create back thrust forces which can make the belt jump around so the pulley slips at each of these pulses but it is not unknown for it to slip in the charging direction or run in both directions, however yours sounds like it needs a replacement alternator.
