Electrical fault

Hi all,

Firstly i want to say what a great site. This is my first post so please bear with me.

I have purchased an Audi A8 (2004) which is a dream and until recently seemed to be running fine. Then while driving the electrics on the dash start to go beserk and all lights were flashing (incl headlights/side lights), and the radio also cuts out. I pulled over and after a short wait restarted the car and all worked fine, until about a week later when the same thing happened again (most recently Fri 29 Aug).

Really worried as not sure what could be cause. I have taken a VAG scan and found various fault codes storted which i have listed below, but not sure what they all mean other than they all suugest some sort of electric problem> Can anyone see if they can see possible cause of problem and let me know how i can fix. Thank you all.

Ok a8 networks are very complex.First you need to address the battery management issue and recharge the battery
also the lin signal is a worry

Please clear all fault codes and recharge the battery and then after using the vehicle run another scan as there are to many under voltage fault codes stored and to many old code stored,concentrate on the august 2008 codes and this will narrow the diagnosis to a manageable level

A8 Tech - thank you for such a quick response- i will definately recharge the battery and let you know how i get on. I know this may sound silly but by disconnecting the battery (for the recharge) will i need to do any sort of resetting, or is it simpy a case of reconnecting after recharge and then rescan?

OK don't disconnect the battery,if you look at the negative terminal you will see the short earth lead goes to the battery manager control unit,there is a negative post there and that's the charging point as the manager measures the amps also if you replace the battery it requires recoding to calculate charge rate.As i mentioned A8 is a very complex car and the battery manager will slowly shut the cars systems down on the returning amps calculation to the battery.The battery needs to be charged correctly and in circuit to prevent further red hearing fault codes.I cant offer a full answer about the how to and how it works as there's not enough space on the forum but if you have the battery display in the mmi functions it will offer a fairly accurate consumption level.If you don't have the display i will tell you how to adapt the mmi set up to show the battery state.The dash communication fault also concerns me but it will become clear when the fault codes have been erased.Also always attach the battery charger when carrying out any electrical work as the battery drain on a8 is very quick and you may be draining the battery with out noticing by having the door open whilst using vag com

A8tech, I do not have the battery indicator on the MMI so if you can tell me how to get that adaptation done i would appreciate it. I will then charge up the battery( without disconnecting!!) and then post back result of how i get on.

Go to address 07
go to adaption channel 02 the self help balloon should highlight your choices and you need to add battery level to the adaption value and save.
Reset the mmi by entering into adaptions again and enter channel 111 and follow the prompt to restart the mmi and this will then allow the battery display to load into the car set up functions.

A8 Tech,
I have tried to make the change to the MMI settings per the instructions you supplied and got as far as getting to address 07, and then to channel 2, but after that there was no self help ballons

The adaption value was showing as 18, but have no idea how much i need to change that value up or down by. I am using Genuine Ross -Tech USB HEX- CAN cable and version 805 of VCDS.

Sorry to be a pain.

I had a quick search of the forum as well to see if this has been answered before but did not find anything. I will do the battery charge in anycase and post update.

Thanks for all your help with the above. I now have the battery meter on the MMI following your instructions, and I cleared all the old fault codes and did the recharge of the battery as well. I did notice that the +ve connector was not tight, ie connected but could move around easily so tightened that as well (not sure if this could have been the cause of the problem?)

After recharging the battery for 4 hours today took the car for a quick short drive, and then did a rescan, and thankfully no faults found, with the only unexplained item being the label description on the following, which i am not sure if i need to worry about?:
