hi all, I'm considering an Audi A4 2.4 V6 (petrol) saloon from 2002 - does this particular engine/model year have any common issues ? Does the standard equipment include the ISOFIX system for fixing child seats ? thanx !

great car, no faults, ISOfix systems for the seats not on standard build (as far as I've noticed - and we have 2 kids with car seats)

no issues with my engine and i'm over 100k now (standard service intervals etc).

    i'd recommend one anyday...

make sure you get leather interior if possible, and also the BOSE system (Audi Concert)

Main problem with the 2.4 is that it a heavy engine & not all that powerful so the fuel economy is rubbish, also meaning the emissions are higher than you'd expect. They sound great & are reliable but the 1.8T 163 has the same power output & is lighter so more efficient & lower tax group, as well as being more common so more choice! If you want a V6 specifically the 3.0 is the better way to go as the engine weighs about the same but you get an extra 50bhp and will give better fuel economy as you dont have to try as hard, plus next year the tax is the same, 2010 its only £25 more! Oh & you'll get a quattro 4wd too as its your only option which is a good thing!!

'03 Kawasaki ZX6R B1H - Currently off the road due to binning it on the M1!

'02 A4 3.0 Quattro Sport - Gone but missed daily!

A quick Google would suggest the following......
"All new car models introduced since early 2006 have been required by law to be fitted with 'Universal' ISOFIX anchorages for a minimum of two seating positions."

My 2002 model does not have ISOFIX.

I recall that there is an Audi technical document indicating that ISOFIX & LATCH anchors can be retrofitted - my source is the Bentley Manuals DVD for USA Audi cars.
Under Technical Bulletins I found document:
    69-06-08 LATCH system, installing/retrofitting (DEC 18, 2006)
It lists all compatible Audi cars with part numbers for the kits from 1992 onwards.

    A4 Saloon 1996-

    TOP Tether Anchors:

    • Anchor Bracket 443 887 269
    • Cap: 443 887 301C (add colour code)
    • Bolt: N 010 240 22
    • Spacer: 810 019 829
    • Threaded plate: 443 887 077C
    • Rivet (qty 2): N 905 763 01

    LOWER Anchors:
    1999-2002 (probably B5 and before)

    • ZAW 269 004 (R)
    • ZAW 269 005 (L)

    2002- (probably means 8E/B6 models)

    • ZAW 269 008 (R)
    • ZAW 269 007 (L)

*** In view of the safety of your little ones I would check this out with a Dealer first ***

Yep, ISOFIX retrofit is perfectly possible, known a few people to of done this. There's no reason at all for this not to be a perfectly safe option, at the end of the day it dosent matter if its the factory, the dealer or you who tightens up the bolts, they're the same bolts!! As long as you get the right OEM bits I see no danger what so ever.

So there is no need to replace the back seat if you want the isofix bolts retrofitted? Do all the chasis come with the mounting points there already then?

I would agree with most of that. before mine started playing up it was great drive although its by no means built for performance. although the engine sounds good. I would say the fuel economy isn't as bad as suggested. you dont need to try that hard to pick up speed and it will be better than the 3.0 in traffic. its more for motorways than throwing through corners though. You only have the option of FWD with the 2.4 whereas the 3.0 has quattro. If you get the mulitronic (which I can't recommend!) the performance isn't that far off the 3.0 tiptronic. If you get the manual the 3.0 is considerably faster. If I had the money I would of got the 3.0 but the 2.4 is by no means a bad choice!

I can recommend the 3.0. I have a 3.0 Multitronic Cabriolet and to give you an idea of fuel, driving from Bradford town centre to Middlesbrough (94 miles) I get 35mpg sticking to motorway speed limits with a bit of traffic congestion in Bradford thrown in.

Running round town alone its not too healthy, around 20mpg.

When you work that out against the cost of a diesel, the wifes diesel does 40mpg, Im actually better off driving mine cos the overall cost if far less.

However, I can also recommend the 1.9tdi which I had before this, I used to get 58mpg on my Bradford run and 45mpg minimum when pootling round.

Audi A4 in general are great in my opinion, 2nd one Ive had and Ive never had the same car twice in a row until now. Maybe im just getting old !
