    While driving earlier today the coil light starting flashing followed by a warning message saying "engine workshop!"

    Car seems to be driving ok, can anyone shed some light on this??

    you should have it scaned for codes but I suspect brake pedal switch. did it go off when you aplied the brake?

    Check your brake bulbs - same thing happened on mine and made me jump!

    Brake light switch, happened to me in july £6.95 for a new switch garage took 40 mins to change as the car was under warranty.
    If it ain't broke leave it alone!!!

    Thanks for all the comments, however I would like to add that the brake lights still work while the warning message and coil light are flashing.

    Could this still be the brake switch? does it just mean the brake switch is on its way out.

    Or is it possible that the brake lights are failing intermittently, meaning I am coincidently checking the brake lights at the time they are working??

    Any assistance would be much appreciated.

    I've also just realised that when the side lights or headlights are on, the brake llights are permanently staying on, regardless of whether my foot is on the pedal or not.

    Yes, the brake switch has four pins, with normally open and normally closed contacts. The brake lights may well still work, but the switch can still be dud.
