    Hi,

I was going to buy a Merc C class Avantgarde CDI 2005/6. But have since reconsidered. I am now looking at A4 TFSI or a Golf GTI MK5. I seem to come across a lot of sites saying to use the high octane fuel - which i wont use when i get one.

Are there any faults to look for? as its a VW i expect there will be quite a few? and what is the true MPG? My petrol megane returns 43mpg, whereas Golf TDI's that ive used only return about 39-40 mpg which is a lot less than the official figures? GTI suffer similar?

    Any ideas?

Hi mate are you using car around London, I have used High Octane fuel on cars that required it and generally gave you slightly better mpg but would not use it unless specified. I think you will find all manufacturers official figures can be taken with a pinch of salt but depends far more on driving conditions. ie around London we generally get around 35 - 45 mpg just dependant on time of day and in cornwall a few weeks ago we where getting around 45 - 55mpg which was excellent most efficient car we have ever had. I am not sure what you will get from a MK5 GTi but a mate gets between 20-25 mpg around time.

Supermarket unleaded does the job. Lots of people swear by the higher priced, higher octane stuff from BP or Shell but all the technical reviews say there is no benefit. Depends if you are paying for your own juice or not.

Actual mpg depends entirely on the size and weight of your right foot and where you drive. My GTi is 35mpg on a run, 41mpg best ever motorway journey but only 25-30mpg around town. I've never acheived manufacturer's claimed figures in 35 years of motoring. Surprised at your Gold TDI experience, my diesel Passat has averaged 41mpg for all the miles since the day I got it.

Faults? Well Golfs are not perfect but c'mon now, it is a Renault that you are driving today? Trim made out of recycled crisp packets, major components held on with blutack and a faint wiff of onions & garlic in the cabin? A least they get good crash test results. Good job, I say.

Once, cars were simple and I was smart. Now things are the other way around.

I would say that is true although the Golf is one the better built cars for the money, I've never know anyone who has had one hate the car.

My mother had a 1600 it was V reg new can not remember model but car was sold last year with 33k miles and never had a problem not even changed tyres.

i have to drive my tdi pretty hard to drop it below 50mpg. if you are sitting around in traffic with the engine running this will obviously seriously drop the ecconomy to the figures you quote, otherwise there must have been something wrong with it.

Yes, must have been something wrong. The phase2 MK1 Meganes are suprisingly good. My interior is like new, with the sports seat bolsters totally unworn and the headlining is as new. As for smelling like onions - my one smells of leather.

I do 20k a year and its now near a 100k and loses a very small amount of oil just before it gets to its 18k service interval.

I want a Mk5 Golf GTI, or an A4 now, but the Megane is so good, as is its comfort levels i am doubting the need to replace it

I have driven loads of cars - Audi's, BMW's Merc's, and others. I dont like fords but have to rate the Fiesta ST above a Mini Cooper.

A car you should experience is the Fiat Barchetta and the car its based on a MK1 ph2 Punto sporting - with the standard gas shocks rear anti roll bar etc - it is a fun car to thrash around twisty roads.

    Golfs MK4

    Common Probs

    1.4 head gasket
    1.6 gearbox
    1.8 coils
