How do the auto wipers work?

Hi there,
My golf has the auto wipers. I've read the manual but still a bit confused on how they work.

Can someone explain it to me including when and how and what i need to do and what buttons etc!

right they work when the lever is put up one click and will work only in rain (no **** lol) but once you take the key out it will have to be reset again and that means puting the lever back down and then up again.

i booked it into vw thinking there was a fault and got this explained to me by a tech.

So every time you get in the car you have to move the right lever up one click?
That kind of seems a bit backwards and manual???!!!

I thought one click up was intermittent?

give it a go, that was what i was told and even got the hose out to check it lol.

intermitant is the auto set, and the slider to adjust speed still works with the auto, i know its silly that you have to set it each time you get in but again this is vw for you, vee germans make noo misteaks yaaaaaaa, yeah they dooo

I have never touched mine since we have had vehicle and always works spot on, what do you have to set when you get in the car?

You don't actually have to set the wipers every time you get in the car.

I always leave mine in the "one click up" position. That way when it starts raining they come on automatically. When you have auto wipers, there is no such thing as intermittant - that position is auto wipers on. In fact, if you put the wipers on full speed in the dry they will slow down and stop after a while as it detects there is no rain on the screen.

They work by detecting something that has appeared in front of the sensor. Therefore, if you get in the car when it is already raining, it doesn't know that it is. It can't see the rain falling as nothing is changing in front of the sensor (the screen is already wet). Therefore you need to clear the screen by either turning the wipers off and on again, or by adjusting the sensitivity. I have had false triggers of the wipers a couple of times in 6 months - it seems to occur when going between bright sunshine and dark shade.

I find driving past trees where the sun shines through the branches and causes intermittent shadows as you drive along usually sets them off, and you cant blame them, so i tend to turn them off when its not raining.

Might seem a bit pointless, but the variable speed and the auto function if it is raining on and off makes the system worth having for me.

BTW, the switch on the top of the wiper stalk (that would normally adjust the frequency of the intermitant wipe) adjusts the sensitivity of the auto wipers. Left is less sensitive, right is more sensitive.
