I have a 2006 Passat 2.0l tdi (140ps) and he engine has failed in a big way. As I left the motorway and pulled away from the traffic lights there was a loud pop and a very impressive cloud of smoke followed me down the road. The very nice man from the AA towed me to the main dealers where it has been for a few weeks now. The report states the turbo has blown and also damaged the engine, I was also told the engine was covered in oil. They also say the failure was due to a lack of lubrication(heat damage was found in the top of the engine) but they can not find a fault with the oil pump .The oil was checked the day before and was at the correct level, as the mileage is 65k it is just out of warranty.
    My questions are,
Would the oil warning light come on if the oil level were to drop or if oil was being lost on the journey?
Could the heat damage be caused if the oil was being lost on my 40 mile journey?
Has anyone else had this problem?

Please can you help reunite me with my VW

Well, I haven`t had this problem yet, but there is time.....

Yes the oil light would come on if your oil level was to drop (below minimum level) whilst you were driving, but `heat damage` would suggest a blockage or other reason for oil starvation if the oil level was within acceptable levels and no problem was found with the oil pump.

On speaking to a mate this afternoon, he told me that that (blockage) was the probable cause of the big ends going on mine.....

Seems to me that all the damage was caused by the turbo blowing, the engine then running on its own oil (the smoke) and hence the heat damage to the top of the engine because of said lack of oil.

You need the dealer on your side, to give you and VW an honest appraisal of the failure, and not try to blame it on you. That way you might get VW to help out because 65k is no mileage.

Thanks for the help, I will go back to the dealer and see if they will help.

The only good thing is the rental car is a Jetta with a 1.4 TSI 170 bhp engine puts a big smile on my face, but it's not the same as my Passat.

When they droped off the car andwas told it was a 1.4 I asked if they had anything better, they said "you'll like this one mate"
I have looked on the VW web site but was unable to find any info on the engine, I was told it had a supercharger and a turbo (strange combination) but when I put my foot down there is no turbo lag (suggests a supercharger) and very impressive acceleration. It is good on fuel (I think), I can average 46mpg but you do have to use super unleaded.

Hi Mate, sorry to hear of your problem, and I too hope that VW show some goodwill, as already said 65k is nothing. I've heard of these engines doing more than 250k miles.

Did you get no other signs or odd noises before it went, like less performance or something?

The car was running as normal, no strange noises or warning lights.
