    Hi to all concerned
Just fitted the AMI unit to my A6 Allroad, absolutely no problem, piece of cake to any DIYer.

Everything supplied by Craig (A8 tech)at TCL Sat Nav Systems www.tclsatnav.com
Complete instructions, plug and play wiring harness, AMI unit etc.

Break down of the job was:-
    1. Remove CD player & disconnect wiring (removal tools supplied)
    2. Remove glove box 5 x 8mm bolts
    3. Cut out slot for CD player in rear of glove box, either use a dremmel or fit an 8mm drill and use it to mill sideways gently, it's only plastic so cuts easily.
    4. Insert AMI unit where CD player was
    5. Insert CD player beside AMI unit (hold this in place with double sided velcro, supplied)
    6. Modify the power wiring harness, basically plug into the existing CD feed from car and supply both the CD & AMI unit. (Cable supplied)
    7. Modify the fibre optic cabling, just follow the instructions regarding the flow of light and joining connector (again cabling supplied)
    8. Test unit via MMI to see if ipod connected
    9. Glove box back in place, found this a touch awkward restling with it trying to locate the holes for the bolts, extra pair of hands would have made this easier
    10. Enjoy unlimited music fully integrated via your MMI system.
So to anyone out there, if your wanting an AMI unit fitted to your Audi, then talk with Craig at TCL Sat Nav Systems.
He will tell you if your vehicle is compatible or not, my local garage initially told me it was not possible to fit AMI. (see earlier thread on here) then after I informed them that it was doable, qouted 760 notes for the job.
I live up in the North of Scotland, so Craig supplied everything for fitting as described above, it's well within the realms of a diyer like myself. The total time was 1 1/2hrs on a Saturday morning.

Also like to say that in my opinion for anyone debating gateway 500 or AMI. If your car is suitable for the AMI then definitely go the AMI road (just my opinion)

Thanks to Craig (A8 tech) and this forum website for the great info.
    Ewen

Firstly – a8-tech it is so refreshing to come across someone on a forum with the obvious expertise, and helpfulness you show!

    Now the sticky bit:

I am just ordering my new A4 – it will be a bog standard A4 Executive S-Line 2.0TDI (170ps) for an 09 reg.

As standard, it comes with phone fitting in the centre armrest – so I am also planning to buy the cradle for my iphone – it is the older version – running version 1.1.2.

Using this I understand I will have hands-free phone, however:

1)Will the phone charge with this set-up?
2)Will I be able to use the ipod aspect through this system?

On top of this I assume control is available through the SW controls!

If I cannot use the iphone’s ipod facilities as standard – what other options do I have to get both phone and music through the iphone?

    Thanks in advance.

    Julie

PS I know it looks like I am grovelling with the first sentence – but it’s genuine, the size of this thread proves it!

Ok update the iPhone firmware version first, this should allow full functionality with the mfsw and allow phone book, latests version 2.2.
The iphone cradle 8P0 051 435 GP will charge the phone and and utilise the roof gps arial.Phone book will transfer via blue tooth as gen 3 cradle has no hardwire unlike gen 2

I presume you have ordered AMI for ipod integration, this will allow the iphone to play music as any ipod but.
If you have not order AMI you can retro fit this no problem to 2009 model

    AMI
Your media player remains stowed away in the glove box during a journey, and is connected to the Audi music interface by a cable. This cable transmits not only the track information and music to the Audi music interface, but at the same time also recharges your media player.

The most important functions of the Audi music interface at a glance:

    * Plays all tracks stored on the player (except DRM-protected files)
    * Operates the portable terminal device via the MMI controls and the optional multifunction steering wheel
    * Displays playlists, artists, albums, tracks and genres on the MMI display
    * SCAN, MIX/RANDOM and REPEAT
    * Track skip in both directions
    * Fast forward and reverse
    * Power supply via adapter cable

The range of control options available for the media players via the MMI and multifunction steering wheel depends on the player and adapter used

If you choose the AUX in socket then this will not charge the iphone as its a jacklead and you have no control over the play list unlike AMI.
Thanks for the comments, this has become a big thread which proves there is so much confusion over modern in car entertainment

    Thanks,

No I haven't ordered any extras yet as I don't understand what I need, can the iphone plug into both the MMI and the phone cradle simultaneously?

If not and it is either/or then it appears no use getting MMI as I rarely use iphone in the car without the phone aspects.

The AMI is located in the glove box if factory ordered or retro fitted and the phone cradle in the arm rest so.
Iphone can not be use as a music player and as a phone at the same time

So it looks like either have phone or have music, but not both!

At the moment I use bluetooth and a pug-in via FM radio for my current car (07 A4) - looks like Audi hasn't really advanced over the last two years then!

How much is the MMI kit in order to retrofit later if I decide?

Does the car recognise it or does it need a vag-com (I have a version 607 which I assume will be too old for the 09 car)

There are two systems in the B8 A4
1 MMI this is identified by the control switches/soft keys located around the gear stick centre console.
2 Gen 3 radio this is identified by the switches/soft keys located on the radio itself.

2009 onwards allows AMI to be retro fitted to both.

You need vcds 805.2 to enable media positions and change the long code for radio

cost around £400 to £500 fitted

Fiited the AMI to my A6 this afternoon, piece of cake to do - took only about 40 minutes including modifying the glovebox. Well chuffed with the way it works.

Just the DAB to sort out now!....
