stone chip repair

Hi,

I've noticed quite a few stone chips on the bonnet of my A4. I know there are companies such as chipsaway and Shine (Halfords) which can do the job but the question is are Halfords own touch-up pens any good?

Is it really necessary to use the primer if its a minor chip?

1. Do the "Spreading" vehicles on the roads damage the car's body? I think they use a combination of salt(!) and sand?

2. Are jetwashes safe?!

I bought touch - up from audi. £5.15 for bottle of paint & bottle of lacquer. Not used, so how good ?
I think gritters do damage & there is sand used with salt, hence cars are more brown than white nowadays this time of year.

I could have done that with a shovel and it would have looked good with that picture quality.

This depends on how deep the chips are. If they are shallow then its fine not to use the primer, however if they are deeper then you may need to build up the depression before adding the coloured lacquer.

Quite right, that's where people like me fall down. Patience and perseverance, combined with a little skill. My next door neighbour is a panel beater with Peugeot and the time he spends on these little jobs, that come his way, makes me realise that most of us haven't got what it takes to do bodywork repairs.

Hi Marc97, As soon as you mentioned shovel it brought me back to a Skoda I bought a while ago, it had a folding shovel as part of the tool kit. No mention it was for bodywork repairs, now I know.

Youtube was sold for nearly £1 billion, and that does seem to be the way to go.
Whatever is available, use it, that's my thinking. Good Luck.
