I have a 02 reg 1.8t Passat with 114k, serviced regularly (when the computer tells me to). Yesterday the STOP: Low oil pressure warning came on twice. Both times were accelerating hard up hill. The first time it happened I thought it might have been from oil moving to one side of the sump (I was also going round a tight bend at the time) so I topped up the oil. The second time was on a straight bit. Both times the warning went off straight away. I drove the rest of the way home at 50-60 mph without any brisk acceleration and the warning stayed off. The engine still sounds fine. Any ideas? It's booked into the garage on Tuesday and wondered what it could end up costing me.

I Think these engines are prone to blocked oil pick up pipe and need the sump taking off to clean sump/pipe.
Don't drive it with oil pressure problems at all as it could cost you an engine.

    Hi

Interetsing post. See my post re: intermittent STOP signals. I am beginning to think we may have an elctrical fault in the wiring relating to the sensors. Like you our machine is running well with no physical signs of defects in th eengine. Having used a fault reader, there is no fault code stored plus we had the now notorious water leak problem into the foot wells a couple of years back. The EMS computer lives in a recess under the drivers seat so gets wet when there is water ingress.

I suggest lifting your carpets to check on the wiring condition and to see if the EMS computer is dry.

Really p's me off if it water ingress and secondary wiring corrosion as VAG seems to have known about the tendancy of Passats to leak in water for over ten years now!

    Good luck.

    Hi

I'm affraid its not a good story-I am now, sadly, driving a Toyota Avensis. Whole series of faults that were manifesting with STOP faults but having consulted (VAG insider) widly, it seems that VW and Audi's across the range are prone to wiring and electrical faults which display as STOP warnings that may or may not be related to the root cause of the fault. You only have to lift the carpets to see the quality (or lack of it) in the wiring and connectors.

The death knell came when I got an intermittent brake STOP warning which I traced back to a fault in the ABS controller unit. This costed out at £1.5k just for the unit! So that was it, all over. Golf's since 1988, followed by Passats and now Toyota! Says it all really and as What Car pithely put it, "VW is trading on its former glories!"

Good luck and I hope that you have a better result!

I am or rather was a big vag fan , i have in the last 3 weeks suffered the following , flooded foot wells , boot that wouldnt let me in , turbo packed in , headlamp failure , stop sign on dash that has been traced to an oil pump failure , all this in three glorious weeks and all due to design faults , this is on a low mileage perfectly serviced but out of warranty passat 1.8T ,never again , i have had better alfas and that is saying something , only thing is i have spent that much i will have to keep it , woe is me !!!
