Not really a suprise as I know they've been doing this to me for a long time. This like Internet game, or video streaming is non-existant.

    Name and shame your ISP's!

TBH, if he's complaining about not getting enough speed for peer to peer he should stop watching porn and get out on the road!
BBC iplayer on the other hand doesn't use peer to peer, and is a superb piece of tech, so he should at least get that.
It does however depend on the type of line and the restrictions on it. I know that as mine is a 50/1 contention ratio when everyone gets home from work and jumps online my speed goes down...

The other thing is, that while we all want cheap/free broadband, the infrastucture in place to support it just isnt there yet. The size of downloads has increaced so fast thier pipelines can't keep up. I think this will happen more and more as time goes on, with only the late adopters winning - like Japan etc where I think they can all have fibre into the house!

He's got a business line though. Besides, I can't even get iPlayer to stream in my flat whatever time of the day! My P2P downloads rarely, if ever go above 15kbps. Besides, not everyone watches porn...

With the price we pay BT should have upgraded their lines. They've known for a long time that the Telecomms industry is booming. They've been at the forefront of a lot of it as the major Telecomms supplier in the UK.

Regardless of all that, if they don't have the infrastructure to support their customers, stop taking on customers! It's only going to get worse, then it's going to cause problems. I've had BT at my flat 3 times this year fixing problems because they're cramming too many people on the line.

Even now I'm not using that dreaded Homehub anymore my internet still disconnects at random but regular intervals.

The only problem with looking around to other suppliers is a lot of their lines still end up going through BT anyway...

I'm definitely going to be looking around when it's up for renewal next!

I agree, I'm with pipex now but am going to really search for the best ISP when I change.

Currently I get unlimited downloads, fixed IP, up to 8mb download and free anytime landline calls for 4.99 first 3 months and 11.99 there after...
trouble is the speed goes from 2mb down to 64kbps at random times...

Hmm, that would do my head in! I'm paying top notch for a service, so I expect to receive a decent speed all of the time! I share a flat with 2 other fellas, so having a good line out of the flat is really important. At peak time, with 3 people hammering the internet we basically get nothing so we normally end up going out or do something else.

The free landline calls are good though! I might have a look at Pipex and see what they're like in Aberdeen.

Any idea how to get free (or incredibly cheap) mobile calls? I've been struggling to find out how. Even Skype will prove too expensive for me the amount I'm having to call mobiles at the moment!

One thing I noticed, was I used to have 3 single ADSL modems around my house (for the 3 computers). It used to frustrate the life out of me when the computers would (for absolutely no reason) totally lose the internet connection. The computer kept telling me it was a problem with the modem, and the modem's software was telling me it was a problem with the internet service !

But, I have since done away with these 3 modems and got a wired router with a built in modem. This business of the computers losing their internet connection simply doesn't happen anymore.

Anybody know what could have been going on ? I had a suspicion that Tiscali (their service is provided by BT) were somehow turning off our internet service. Possible ?

Having 3 router modems connected to the same phoneline?

I can't see how that would work well at all. Sounds like you have the situation sorted though.

No no no, single modems, not router/modems.

Now I have one single router/modem. And it works.

Sorry to say odie y greenphotos got the edge here. Granted, not all peer-2-peer traffic is porn, but at the moment, at lest 80% of all peer-2-peer traffic is still illigal downloads (i.e. mp3's, movies, cracked software, porn, etc...). Before BBC and Channel 4 started using P2P for their ow broadcasts, that was easily 100% illegal content download. And if it's illegal, why should ISP's not be permitted to trottle P2P traffic. It's BBC's and Channel 4's own stupid fault that they are in this situation... Do you honestly believe that ISP's can differenciate legal P2P form illegal P2P traffic...? The only way to do that is to do a portscan on all systems in order to see which ports are open and link them to the appropriate software that is using these ports.

What was that sentence in the article...? "BBC executives have threatened to "name and shame" internet service providers who shape P2P traffic as BT is doing." You know what? I can do that on their behalf. The answer is ALL ISP's ARE TROTTLING P2P...!!!

Blaming BT or other ISP's for not upgrading their networks is not the solution either. The cost involved in doing so is huge and just can't be covered with the money they get from leasing DSL connections to home users.

Yes I hate the fact that most BB connections are capped nowadays. Yes I hate the fact a lot of ISP's are restricting services for their top 50 users. Yes I hate the fact that P2P traffic is being trottled. Yes I hate the fact that we all need to keep up with contention ratio's... But for once I can see where ISP's are coming from and I'm on their side on this one. Everyone is pointing the finger at them but it's companies like the BBC and other big content providers that are leaching off their back and are throwing stupid amounts of large files on the net available for download... BUT THEY DON'T PAY A PENNY FOR THE PREVILEGE...!!!

    True indeed,

I think we need to work out if it is the content provider or the content carrier who needs to sort them selves out.
Personally I think we should increace the capabilities of the ISP network (alhtough I understand this is costly and time consuming) rather than decrease the amount of available media (which I can't see happening the way things are going)
