    Hi everyone,

I am new to these forums and also to VWs so please forgive my ignorance. I am a pensoiner and struggling with the problem below. Any help, advice etc will be much appreciated.

I have a 2004 Touran and the ESP lwarnng light shows permanently on the instrument panel. Recent diagnosis by VW dealer advises new ABS sender required; estimated cost £1500, yes £1500, including VAT and fitting (3.7 hrs), can anyone offer advice and help?

Get someone with vagcom to scan for faults, clear them and see if it comes back.
It might be a dirty wheel sensor.
The dealers are taking the p*ss.

    That is a huge expence!

Although the light you have on and the fault code they have read to match and make sense. I would be inclined to give the connections a clean and a squirt of WD40 to see if it is just a connection problem.

As the sensors are down by the wheels, they are subject to a lot of dirt etc.

I would agree with kite, once you have done that, you could find someone local to you with VAG-COM who could try and clear the fault for you to see if it returns.

Worst case, it might still need changing, however, I can't see it being a difficult job and could be easily done yourself if you can find the sensor cheaper somewhere else.

    I hope this helps.

No, not really I am miles away from you, otherwise I would help.

Perhaps have a look at the locations list on here?

    Hi Guys,

I may have indvertently misled you all. The actual fault is 0201 Sender ABS Control Unit and not simply an ABS sender.

The VW part no quoted is 1K0 614 517 H BEF.
Does this shed any more light on the problem?

A local garage owner suggests that it may be possible to repair the original unit, does this sound feasible?

I will report more news as I have it.

    Thanks everyone!

Folks I now have more information.

If you are tuned into this thread Crasher perhaps you can throw some more light on this.

Fault code read:-Fault 01435 (or 01453 not sure) but read as Brake pressure sensor 1 - electrtical fault in circuit - G201 ABS Control Unit.

I have also established many other Tourans and golfs have been having this same issue.

On a related site someone is trying to gather data to put numbers on it.

I have the same problem on my 2005 Golf and VW have quoted me £1482 for replacing the ABS control/hydraulic unit.

I would also be interested in the site that Territouran referred to. However, I am aware of some other instances of this problem. Here are the links:

The site I referred to previously is currently only collecting data on Tourans, but the numbers are growing.

Perhaps through this forum and possibly the MKIV forum, others could collect data on Golf ESP/ABS problems and other VW models. Then we could put the whole picture together.

Perhaps the moderators have an idea of how best to do this, and they could make some suggestions?!

Someone has suggested that we should provide all this data to the SMMT (Motor Manufacturers' Association).

There are also many other threads on this topic if you search the pages or enter ESP or ABS in the search engine.
