i am so happy, i've just got my first passat, 1.8t se 66k with 1 owner and full vw history.
One problem, feels like fuel starvation. Misses like hell at motorway speeds, and wont go over about 70mph, then without moving accel pedal it will seem to get some more fuel and pull away to about 80mph.
I also thought it could be coilpack but it feels like fuel. I hear the fuel filter seems to get left during servicing coz its awkward to get to ? Where is the filter located ?
It also wont rev cleanly to redline as if its starved as well.

Fuel filter (in line type) is located on the drivers side, underneath just in front of the fuel tank. Couple of hose clips and she's off. Easy to replace,

If all else fails get MAF sensor checked out. (disconnect it and see if the engine revs even out.)

Does it feel quick at lower speeds, - acceleration wise i mean? My turbo is faulty at the moment, but before it started playing up the car really felt quite quick, particularly changing up to second it would pick up speed very quickly very easily.(quite often found myself speeding in 30 zones)

well, it seems worse when engine is cold possibly because the fuel mixture/requirement is higher ?
Scanned for codes today and nothing showing.
My thoughts are first fuel filter, second check ignition module, third coils and leads.
    Any more thoughts appreciated.

Will try and do filter tomorrow, and unplug MAF if the filter makes no difference.

OK, tested icm continuity between pin 3 on 5 pin side and all pins on 4 pin side and got 480 ohms on all 4.
When revved from idle (cold) then the engine speed climbes in a cycling motion. i.e. the revs climb then faulter, climb then faulter, climb then faulter......
Where exactly is the maf ?

MAF sensor is located in the air cleaner box. Wiring goes through a grommet at the front of the box, prise out the grommet and the plug is staring at you.

OK, I unplugged MAF today and car revved fine. Plugged it back in and it revved like a dog again. Ordered a new Bosch unit from VW for £88 inc vat.
Should be sorted tomorrow, thanks everyone. Boy I cant wait to get behind the wheel. I've had a Jeep Grand Cherokee for the last year !
