    Hi there,

I pick my new car up next week (Mk5 GT TDI - 140 - 04 plate).

The garage are getting the cambelt and water pump done for me as part of the deal.

I trust they will do this but i'd quite like to be able to visually check myself that the parts look new before i drive away. Could someone tell me what to look for and how i can tell they are new parts?

    Thanks.

One way, is to ask for the old parts before you go.
Nothing to see here, move along..

You can look for evidence of disassembly such as the edges of cover plates cleaned up, water stains, new jubilee clips, scrape rings in the grime around bolt heads and so on but all this proves is that someone monkeyed about with something, sometime.

Make sure that the service book has been stamped up (clearly) to indicate job done and that you have the work clearly indicated on your receipt for purchasing the car, since it was an agreed condition of your contract to purchase. That way, if it goes bang in the first year at least you have somethng to go to the Small Claims Court with.

Also, ask them to confirm that they used genuine VW parts and not something knocked up in a shed in Veitnam. If the answer is yes, ask for a copy of the parts delivery receipt. If they won't supply and if you just don't trust them, walk away.
