Is BT controlling your internet?

Not really a suprise as I know they've been doing this to me for a long time. This like Internet game, or video streaming is non-existant.

Name and shame your ISP's!

TBH, if he's complaining about not getting enough speed for peer to peer he should stop watching porn and get out on the road!
BBC iplayer on the other hand doesn't use peer to peer, and is a superb piece of tech, so he should at least get that.
It does however depend on the type of line and the restrictions on it. I know that as mine is a 50/1 contention ratio when everyone gets home from work and jumps online my speed goes down...

The other thing is, that while we all want cheap/free broadband, the infrastucture in place to support it just isnt there yet. The size of downloads has increaced so fast thier pipelines can't keep up. I think this will happen more and more as time goes on, with only the late adopters winning - like Japan etc where I think they can all have fibre into the house!

He's got a business line though. Besides, I can't even get iPlayer to stream in my flat whatever time of the day! My P2P downloads rarely, if ever go above 15kbps. Besides, not everyone watches porn...

With the price we pay BT should have upgraded their lines. They've known for a long time that the Telecomms industry is booming. They've been at the forefront of a lot of it as the major Telecomms supplier in the UK.

Regardless of all that, if they don't have the infrastructure to support their customers, stop taking on customers! It's only going to get worse, then it's going to cause problems. I've had BT at my flat 3 times this year fixing problems because they're cramming too many people on the line.

Even now I'm not using that dreaded Homehub anymore my internet still disconnects at random but regular intervals.

The only problem with looking around to other suppliers is a lot of their lines still end up going through BT anyway...

I'm definitely going to be looking around when it's up for renewal next!

Currently I get unlimited downloads, fixed IP, up to 8mb download and free anytime landline calls for 4.99 first 3 months and 11.99 there after...
trouble is the speed goes from 2mb down to 64kbps at random times...

Hmm, that would do my head in! I'm paying top notch for a service, so I expect to receive a decent speed all of the time! I share a flat with 2 other fellas, so having a good line out of the flat is really important. At peak time, with 3 people hammering the internet we basically get nothing so we normally end up going out or do something else.

The free landline calls are good though! I might have a look at Pipex and see what they're like in Aberdeen.

Any idea how to get free (or incredibly cheap) mobile calls?

I've been struggling to find out how. Even Skype will prove too expensive for me the amount I'm having to call mobiles at the moment!

One thing I noticed, was I used to have 3 single ADSL modems around my house (for the 3 computers). It used to frustrate the life out of me when the computers would (for absolutely no reason) totally lose the internet connection. The computer kept telling me it was a problem with the modem, and the modem's software was telling me it was a problem with the internet service !

But, I have since done away with these 3 modems and got a wired router with a built in modem. This business of the computers losing their internet connection simply doesn't happen anymore.

Anybody know what could have been going on ? I had a suspicion that Tiscali (their service is provided by BT) were somehow turning off our internet service. Possible ?

I can't see how that would work well at all. Sounds like you have the situation sorted though.

No no no, single modems, not router/modems.

Now I have one single router/modem.

And it works.

3 ADSL Modems? I didn't know it was possible to connect 3 modems, I would have thought they'd be constantly fighting for the same space on the line, therefore either causing massive data collisions or not allowing them to sync with the line.

With the one unit you have 1 modem connected, then the router aspect of the unit allowing all your computers to access the same line.

Did you manage to use the 3 modems at once? On the same line?

Or did you only use one at a time?

Haha, I forgot to mention that... only 1 computer would work on the internet at a time.

But they were connected to the same line.

But even with one computer on and the others off, it would kick me off the internet, and if I shut that down and went to the others, they were the same.

It was as though BT or Tiscali had attacked my line with the "you have no internet anymore mwahahaha" weapon.
