Hi all. I'm thinking of turning my mk3 Golf TDI into a project car and I'm wanting to replacing my TDI 90 with a 5 Cyl TDI engine from a VW Transporter. I'm looking for one from the variants made before the new T vans came out last year. Does anyone know if this engine will fit in my Golf and if it does what will I all need and how much might it cost?

    Thanks
    John

    Hi Mate

Just been chatting with a pal and VW specialist of mine, he think it would be almost impossible to fit a 5 cyl engine in a Golf.

The existing engie/gearbox it a reasonable fit between the chassis legs, so an engine with an extra cylinder length, I would imaging would not go in.

Another thing is what gearbox or driveshafts would you use?

We are not saying in cannot be done, after all anything is possible if you want to do it, but it would need a lot of investigation first

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Stuart, thanks for the reply.

If I remember correctly the VW Transporters are all rear wheel drive? I'm guessing that because the engine is fitted vertically in the vans that theres no way it would fit like that in the Golf. I would try to adapt it to fit like the existing engine in my Golf. The driveshafts and gearbox would come off the Transporter as well. I won't be taking it on for a while anyway, I'm helping my mate rebuild an LDV 400 series minibus at the moment which needs a new engine!

    Thanks once again!
    John

P.S. I once saw someone putting a Vaux 2L 16V 'redtop' engine in a 1980 Mini Clubman estate and someone else cramming a Rover 3.5L V8 engine in a Triumph Stag! Hopefully I might have that level of dedication with my Golf project!

    Hi mate

The Transporters from 1991 onwards were front wheel drive, and the engine fits transverse as it does in the Golf. This is why we were unsure if it would fit between the chassis rails, without a lot of modifications to the structure of the car.

But as you say, with dedication and determination anything is possible
