    Hi there,

I have got a 1999 a4 2.8 quattro and have noticed that the power steering fluid is low. I asked at halfords what fluid to put in and they said its audi,s own power steering fluid? Does anyone know if i can buy any other fluid as audi will prob charge a fortune for it. I did notice though that the fluid in there at the moment is a brown ish colour and normal power steering fluid is a red colour. Can anyone help.

    Cheers Mark.

Marcass power steering fluid only gets used if there is a leek in the system the fact your power steering fluid is brown may mean its either never been changed or it has a contaminate!!
check is your steering noisy, graunchy do you get judder whilst turing the wheel?
also its important to note that power steering fluid should be checked whilst the engine is running and before you check it move the steering lock to lock a couple of times then with engine still running check the level quickly. If you check the level any other way you will probably gat a false reading.
If all else fails then as a precaution get the fluid changed i have used fluid from german swedish car parts for the last few years on all my vag cars and have never had a problem hope this helps for gsf follow the link bellow http://www.gsfcarparts.com/

    Hi
Thanks for the advice. I will call gsf tomorrow as i looked at the website link you gave me and see they also sell parts, and i may need a cv joint for my 1999 2.8 a4 quattro.
I live in leytonstone london, i dont suppose you know of a good but cheap garage in london that could change the cv joint and also look at my power steering fluid.

    Chhers Mark

    Hi,
I am also looking for info on power steering fluid having just bought some from Halfords - own brand LHM Plus Specialist Mineral Fluid. As handed out by a guy in the shop once he had checked their own info sheets but as it seems critical you use the right stuff want to make sure it is OK before i open the bottle to check colour - green?? and then find out it isnt what i need.
    Cheers TC

You need VW/SEAT/Skoda/Audi G004000M2 mineral PAS fluid which is green. Available from dealers (Are the lower brands cheaper at retail than Audi dealers??) at about £7 per litre IIRC.
