Hi guys, new to this forum after becoming the owner of a 57 Golf GT Sport 170, having traded in my Honda S2000 on Tuesday. First impressions are very good indeed though I must confess I was nervous about the change right up until the very last minute (but new house purchase and our dear government's view on all things 'oil' made the change a no brainer really).

So, impressed with the torque, the S2000 had none, always needed to be revved hard, it surges nicely in all gears (don't like first though but this is my first diesel), appears to corner well though not given it full beans yet (will I kill myself if I turn off the ESP?!) and I think it looks great. All in all, very happy!

My question was about remaps, are they worth it, do they make that much real world difference? Is the VW warranty invalidated (I am assuming it is) and what are the post performance figures really like?? Finally, whom would you recommend to do this and how much is this likely to cost me.

    Thanks in advance

    Neil

    Hi Neil,

There is more info on this if you search the forum but here is some info anyway to get you started. I've got a GT TDI (140 BHP and 320 NM of Torque), went to ChippedUK and had a remap using the ST3 device they offer. Then rolling roaded my car and its now producing 176BHP and 410 NM of Torque. I think its well worth the money (£349 in my case) as it has totally transformed my car and it improved my MPG!

I've seen 170 BHP Golfs like yours with 210+ BHP

    www.chippeduk.com
    or 01527 579345

Speak to Jayson and mention that you have been recommended from this forum and he'll do you a good deal.

Not sure about how it changes your warranty though but what they don't know won't hurt them unless you need to claim for anything. You can remove the map with the ST3 as the original is stored on the device.

    Hope that helps

    Owen

I'm due to get a VW Golf GT sport 170 (diesel) myself in September as a company car. Do you know what the economy's like yet? Not sure whether to take the tax hit for free fuel or pay for the fuel myself?

On the subject of remaps, totally different car and engine so not completely relevant I'm afraid, but I have an A4 1.8t Quattro which I had remapped at Awesome GTI in Manchester. The difference in performance and power delivery was night and day. Huge improvement over stock.

    Hey Guys

P-Torque were the first UK tuner to offer maps for the 170PD engines.

We charge £295.00 all in for members. Normal figures are 205 - 212bhp. There a few reviews under our forum section on briskoda.net if you fancy a read

We also map out the well known hesitation in the lower rev-range!

I have same model, same year and have had a remap .

    are they worth it
    Yes !!
I suppose you are seeking some reasons as it is not all good news ...
In monetary terms the increase in fuel economy (yes - increase in economy if not driven like a nutcase) probably means payback in about 20 years
Front tyres wear more quickly (occasionally you have to try your investment out) and are expensive, especially if you have the 18" elastic bands
Insurance can cost £100 more each year
On the plus side; fantastic acceleration, extra torque, not having to change down so much .... and it's just so much fun .

do they make that much real world difference
Wasn't too different on first run, until I found a straight road and went into overtake mode - wow !!
    post performance figures
I didn't have rolling road test but used VAG-COM and long road - I registered 208bhp.
whom would you recommend to do this
Jayson at chipped UK gave me a very keen price and has good reviews but it was just a bit too far for me to drive.
Whoever you choose, a rolling road test would be useful (though not essential) so you know what it's doing and, of course, you can tell the insurance a more accurate power increase figure.

    i had a mk 4 tdi 100bhp to 145

and has it happens my mk 5 is getting re-mapped tomorrow 104 BHP to 155

and yes, it transforms the car, 1st gear is just unusable if you boot it as it just want to spin the wheels, 2nd feels like 1st used to be, 3rd feels like second etc...

you get through the revs a lot quicker and it just feels awsome. well worth £300

Does it make it more likely that the Turbo will fail?
