There are a lot more mobiles (usually a nice man in blue, partly concealed, with a pair of binoculars on a tripod, but sometimes in the back of a van or estate car parked innocently at the side of the road). They are also now positioning themselves just after a fixed camera to catch those who slow down and then speed up.

Transgressions are 'rewarded' by a letter some time after the event, asking for a donation of 135€, or 90€ if you pay up quickly. On-the-spot fines are now usually only for non-French reg'd cars, but then only if there are two or more police manning the camera so that they can wave you down. A friend of mine who drives a UK reg'd car keeps 90€ in his glove box for just such occasions.....He doesn't get points of course.

Normally it's not zero tolerance, they are looking for 'excessive' speed.
