I think you'd only get a new one from VW. Try ebay for a good secondhand one. Theres one here (maybe not the right one though):

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOLKSWAGEN-REM...d=p3286.c0.m14

The other thing is, if you're really unlucky (like me) your 1998 Passat is about the only year where you can't set the key to the car yourself (turn on the ignition, switch hazards on, kick NSR tyre, blast horn etc.) You have to take it to VW who will charge you about fifty quid to do it for you (takes them about 5 minutes).

    Good luck!

Ive copied and pasted what I wrote in the original thread.

    Original thread here https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ad.php?t=44887

Main dealer will prob cost round the £200 mark, plus there gonna want all the documentation, keep the car for a day and the blood of your first born.

    Alternatively

FInd out what part number and frequency is of your existing key. Prise apart the two bits of your fob and the model number plus freq, will be written on the bit that holds the buttons. Pat number will prob start with HL0 ..... with either 433Mhz(old) or 434Mhz(newer) frequency. Chances are yours is newer.

Buy a blank uncut, non programmed key fob from ebay for about £30 to £40 Get the blade cut via any half deccent blacksmiths, here in bradford they charge a tenner.

Then using Vag-tacho and Vag-com code the new key. Takes all in about 10mins to do, BUT you obviously need the software. If you can find someone local to you, they my be willing to code it for you

Vag-tacho is used to read the immobiliser code from the existing key, and vag-com is used to code the new key with the code you read using vag-tacho.

Easiest thing is dealers but you have that bitter after taste of having your pants pulled down. Doing it the other way is harder but you're left with a satisfying smile on your face "

dealers will sell you just a blank blade, dont know how much for, best bet would be ebay, seen a fair few on there, but it depends on what kind of blade.

    Hi Chaps ,

    Well its like this...

I only have one key for my passat ...the remote type with the flick out key.
I have an old key from an 04 golf that we had a while back.
I was thinking I could put a new blade in the 04 golf key get it cut to fit the passat and get the remote re-programmed ?
Or at the very least have a spare key.

Do we think this is possible ?

And how do I go about it ?

    Cheers Grant

    Hi again ,

OK I have checked out ebay and the blades look easy to get hold of.... for 3 or 4 quid.

Its just the re-programming that looks tricky.

    Cheers Grant

    Imran

Can you let us know where you got the key cut in bradford? Did you reprogramme it yourself or did you get someone to do it for you? I'll be travelling to bradford in the next couple of weeks so may get a new key cut whilst I'm there.

    Thanks

    Hi
My 98 passat has a non VW replacement key which works OK - its just not quite the same as the propper VAG one - bit dissapointing really (not flick-out key), was cheap enough though - £20 cut and programmed. From crewe somewhere I think.
