    Hello all.
    I own a 1.8 20v 1998 VW Passat. Petrol.

I was driving on M1 Luton at 50mph and due to heavy traffic, i was going slow..
The idle speed when not in motion, kept on going up and down.
I have no clue what is going on.
Suddenly, when i was turning, the power steering lost the power and the car stalled .
    This was at something 10-20mph.
    Its scary when this happens.
now it just happens again and again.
during idle speed, the acceleration rpm goes very low as if its going to stall and suddenly jumps up.

If you can guide me a procedure to follow to fix the problem it would be great.

Please help. I dont know what the problem is.

I was told that the problem could be to do with the idle stabilizer/actuator valve.
but i dont know where its located ?

    Thanks,
    Purav

purav i seem to have same problem with my 1.6 97 passat. Will progressively get worse, dont know whats causing it yet the garage can't find a problem with it either. When driving it will judder violently cutting out and restarting and at very low speeds will cut out dead electrics, power steering, brake pressure, steering wheel locks. If you discover what it is please post a reply. Sorry can,t be any help. moses

    Hi Purav
I had the same problem with my passat and found the problem to be the throttle body needed cleaning. Very easy to do yourself.

Problem solved at last by a local garage. Running like new.

purav i seem to have same problem with my 1.6 97 passat. Will progressively get worse, dont know whats causing it yet the garage can't find a problem with it either. It was the crank sensor ( a magnetic sensor that senses a purposely set gap on the cranck wheel) used for timing the engine as you drive. As it was damaged from touching the crank fly wheel it had lost a quarter of an inch of its original length. And obviously was not timing the engine correcly causing the violent judder and stalling. Was found on their code reading machine came out as FAULT FOUND 00513 CRANK SENS G28 SPEED SIGNAL.

Obviously there are loads of faults that can be responsible for the car troubles mentioned on this page and this was mine. just posting this thread to tell you how my fault was resolved. cheers lads. moses.
