I think your mk3 has 2 front speakers in each front door and then two more up on the dash. Im also pretty certain the ones in the door are the standard 13cm speakers so pop into halfords and they'll know..

You dont have to worry about the 4x50 of your head unit if your not going to do anything drastic, if its justs changing the 4 speakers, just make sure they dont draw over 50w each (they wont).

Go into your local car stereo shop and look for a pair of 13cm full range speakers, they're extremely easy to find. Change the two in the doors first and see how it sounds. Might not be necessary to change the ones on the dask. Prices range from £20/pair --> £120. Spend £60 and should sound pretty decent. big improvement over the stock

as has been said, if you're just dealing with a head unit on 4x50w, i dont think there would be any need to change your speakers IMO. only if you are intending to do a full sound install will you need to do that, youd probably have to install some tweeters or better ones if you have any. TBH, vw dont really do poor systems, my mk4 is running all standard apart from the head unit and it still kicks my last cars rear end!

i really agree with that the sound system in my mk3 is on the poor side...however last year I rented the new polo for a month, and the sound in that was excellent..and it was totally stock!

i think the sound set ups differ from model to model? not sure, the Gt tdi i have, compared to the fiat i had is kick a$$. i had a sub in the brava and tbh when you have your head unit set right and at the right volume, you can feel the bass just through the standard speakers. i honestly wouldnt bother myself about upgrading unless i intended to start battering my ears
