    Hi,
I'm looking at getting a 2002 Bora 130 SE and have just done an AA inspection on one I saw on autotrader. It has 69000 miles and so the cambelt needs to be changed, which is fine as the dealer will do this.

Two main points that the inspection showed were that
    1) The nearside front outer drive shaft gaiter is split - I think the dealer will do this, I don't think its too major ?
    2) Various paint chips around the vehicle have been left and are now showing signs of light corrosion, these will require immediate attention to prevent further deterioration.

The paint chips worry me as I haven't seen the car because I'll be travelling over from Ireland for it. Has anyone had any corrosion problems ?
I'm hoping the engineer only mentioned them to cover himself but I'm really not sure !

    Cheers
    Mike

Well its been a while but I bought this car, yay !! The dealer got all the required work done including detailing the paint chips. Brought it back to Ireland last week, I'm well impressed with the car. I can't get over the power, my last car was a 98 1.3 corolla so its a big step up.

Anyways I'm looking forward to contributing to these forums (Or more like asking lots of questions )

I'msure VW have a 12 year anti corrosion policy on their bodywork.... Might be worth doing some digging around if it is still a problem.

    Congratulations on your purchase!

I will be surprised if you get any joy with VW body warranty...

I have an 05 Bora and took it to an approved Vw body shop because i beleive its a warranty claim.

Its a small area of rusting and paint bubbling on the C pillar right where the rear window is bonded to the pillar.

THus its impossible for it to be a stone chip - anyway went to VW and spend like an hour testing paint thicknesses of my car panels, kept trying to tell me that my car had been resprayed (The whole rear end apparently).... Anyway i fought my case and argued that i have had no work done since i bought it 12 months ago and before i bought it a full HPI check confirmed no accidents etc.

Anyway its still being processed but hopefully i won!

My point is that VW wont pay if its caused by stone chips etc, only if its a defect.

No harm in trying though, Also the older the car the less willing they are to do it, i was lucky as mine is just outside of the mechanical warranty so is still quite new.

With regards the stone chips they don't appear to be a problem anymore, the dealer did a pretty good job fixing them, there's only few in the front which seem normal enough for its age. I am just after noticing some bits of rust where the spare wheel is kept however, it doesn't look too bad, I don't think its anything to worry about, though I'm not fully sure to be honest.

Thats interesting about the 12 year anti corrosion policy, I must read up on it just to be aware of it. However from your reply speed12 it seems hard enough to get vw to do anything about it, they seem to be fairly hard to convince about the cause of the corrosion. Hope ya win your case speed12.

And yeah STEWY L hopefully I won't have too many questions, well questions with problems at least !

    Cheers,

I hope so too! I dont think it will be a problem now its proved that my car has not been resprayed, also there is no way a stone chip or other damage could have caused the defect, since it seems to start from behind the rear window rubber sealant.

Basically the rear window has to be removed for the job to be done properly.

Apparently VA have recently changed their paint and body warranty process, it involves a so called proffessional to take various paint thickness checks (THe guy who saw me was not great, he did not know how to use the thickness probe very well, and treid doing it on radius, as well as a wet dirty panel....

Once they have done this they take various photos and then process it, its been a week and i have not heard anything....

    Will keep you posted!

I'm very fond of mine to! though i cant help think its a bit jinxed.... my old Bora ran with no problems at all for 12 months.

My new one... well on new years day whilst in the lakes we hit some flash flood (Basically a wall gave in and emptied water onto the road). So had to have a whole new engine fitted - luckily done through insurance.

THen when i finally got it back after 5 weeks, The clutch release bearing was knackered, so back in again for 2 weeks to be sorted - luckily i got VW to pay for it!

Now recently i have had a good 3-4 months, have done some subtle mods, but then the other day my brother rolled his 306 past my car with his drivers door open, it caught my front bumber, dug into my brand new tyres, scored down the tyre wall, scored down my brand new alloy and knocked the tracking off.....

So now i am driving round with three 17" RS4 alloys and one 16" highline alloy.... not a good look!
