    Hi all,

well, I've just completed the 80k service on my '03 130tdi and couldn't believe how straight forward it was. All done bar gearbox oil check.

Got the parts from local GSF (£73 + £23 for new wipers).

Had to but some tools ..
    - a Pela oil sucker £35 but it is re-useable.
    - oil filter wrench £10 again re-useable.
    - haynes manual £20 !

I used the 'How To guide' by Big Col so thx for that.

    Things I leant ..
    - I expected the fuel filter would have a replaceable inner but it's a complete replacement. I used washing up liguid to get the pipes off & on.
    - Pela oil sucker was great so no more grovelling under the car for services.
    - Everything can be accessed from above once the engine cover is off.

The fuel filter and air filters had propably not ever been replaced so the car feel really smooth now.

I wonder how the garage can charge £350 for a big service .. it took me less than 3 hours and next time will be 1.5 hours

btw - also been running on 60% diesel / 30% makro rapeseed oil for 4k and all is good

    Hi Hughie,
Have also had an 80k service done but according to the service manual the glow plugs need changing every 40k. I am not willing to pay the garage for this seeing as they forgot to do it in the first place. I intend to do this myself but I don't know how to take the main engine cover off to get at the plugs/engine. If you could give me any advice about how to do this I would be much very grateful.
    Thanks,
    Andy

    Hi Andy36,

I had a look in the Haynes over the weekend & I couldn't find reference to glow plug changing as a service item ....

    Hi All,

finally got the courage to do the gearbox oil today.

Had to buy the 'special' spline key with the hole in it £7.80.

Getting gearbox oil out meant the undertrays had to come off of course. Once that was done, the drain plug was easy to remove and drain the oil into a drain tray.

Getting the 2.25 litres of Titan Gear Syn 75-90 (£18 for 4ltrs at GSF) in was tougher.. eventually I used a length of 15mm chrome tube, with a funnel jammed in one end and an old flexy plastic tube (from an oild hypoid bottle) wedged & sealed in the other. Then with the long metal tube inserted from above in the bonnet area, I (underneath) held the plastic tube in the filling aperture whilst Mrs Hughie poured in the oil from above.

Quite hard for me but now done.

What was an amazing improvement (before the gearbox oil change) was lubricating the gear shaft with Marley silicon paste. Gearchange was immediately slick
