You need to swap the little transponder chips over, put the 1 out your old key into th new key

Then you will need new transponders if the keys are second hand and will need the programmed with diagnostic equipment (VAG COM or similar) and will need the skc code to program them (Can be retrieved from the instrument cluster with vag tacho). Your best bet would be to have a decent mobile auto locksmith come out and do it for you.

Surely, if the keys came from the same car as the clocks then the immobiliser in the clocks will be looking for the old keys!!

I think it's more to do with the clocks knowing that they are in a different car and need programmed to tell it that its a new car.

In theory I could take my clocks and key and stick them in an RS4 and happily drive it away otherwise

Just my thoughts on the matter

    Hang on.

After a theft of the dash insert the engine control unit and all vehicle keys must also be replaced, i.e. a new immobiliser system must be created. On vehicles with immobiliser 3 this is unavoidable

If you have immobiliser 3a you cant replace the lock set without replacing the dash and the engine ecu also the fuel pump as the 2.5 tdi pump is linked to the immobilser and re writting the airbag vin.

This can only be done with new parts to 3a and it normally costs about £2000.But add another £2000 for the pump.

Insurance companies go white when b6/b7 a4 have a stolen key issue as there is no way around it but check if you have 3a before you try it.

In this case you may well just need to match the dash with the engine control unit and the pump.

If you have immobiliser 4 you can rewrite the chassis number and in my experiance with locksmith people its best to goto the dealer as vag tacho can cause damage in cases like this

Best bet is to refit the old ignition barrel and order a key to match the barrel and it should code.
Delete the stored remote settings and recode the remotes.
Replace the door barrel and boot barrel with the spare lock set so no one can open the locks with the missing key.
