Door lights not working

Hi All
My problem is that when I open any door of my 1996 A4 the light in the roof does not work. I have set the light switch correctly in the roof and it does not work. However all light in the top are functional. Adding to that when I do take the key out of the car the lights in the roof of the car do light correctly. I even tried replacing the whole light module that is in the top roof but that did not change anything.

So I do believe that there is some IC or some Fuse that is broke but I just cant seem to find out which one. Can anyone tell me what to do ? It used to work great.
I was told that it might be a stuck circuit. But without further details that knowledge is useless to me. I know how to dismantle the door fabrik to reach the doors guts. And I know where the door locking mechanism is located. But what then ?

Door contact switches I'd say....are they the post type on a '96...easy to swap if they are....later ones are built into the door lok iteslf :-(

And do you have contact switches you can see or are they part of the lock mechanism (sp)? You might get some more info out of a scan - could be water has got to the control unit...but you would usually see other 'funky' things going on too....

So what you have is :

The lights work when you are sat in the car using the dome switch - with and without the key?
The lights work when you leave the car - ie key out lights come on.
The lights go out when you lock up the car.

Your don't get lights on when you open the car....

Do you have the DIS that shows doors open etc?

Sounds like more than just a contact switch not working correctly - unless they all run in-line with each other....

Mine has same fault. Unlock the doors, light comes on, start car, light goes off, take the key out of the ignition, light comes on, lock the car, light goes off. The light also goes off after about 15 or so seconds but when I open the door (any door), no light!
As for the contact switches, if I leave the headlights on and open the door the warning buzzer sounds so the contact switch seems to be working.
The interior light control is part of the central locking module on mine (95/96 without RCL) and I've fitted several of these due to a central locking fault so I ruled that out. Is there a seperate control unit?
