I just picked up a new A4 Avant which came with the Bose stereo system. It also has Sirius satellite radio. I prefer my iPod, so I bought the conversion kit from the dealer for $170, a lot for a few cables and such. It plugs into the Sirius port in the back of the stereo unit, so you can no longer get satellite radio. Now they tell me it is two hours of labor to put it in, for about $250. It seems to me this is a 15 minute installation. Remove the stereo, remove the glove box, unhook the cable to Sirius and plug in the iPod. Thread the cable and put it all back together.

My questions- does removal of the stereo require any more than four flat pieces of metal, or is there a specially shaped tool? Do I need to re-program the stereo system, or enter a code? Is part of this conversion in the back of the car, or is it all in the dash? I am generally quite capable with mechanical and electrical things, but is this a job best left to the dealer?

This website sells keys to remove the newer Audi stereos, including the Symphony. However, I was unable to get through the site to actually complete the order.

The four keys came from the British website, and I was able to get the stereo out. The keys could be made at home if you are good with metalworking and have an example to go by, but flat pieces of metal won't work very well.

Making the conversion to the ipod looks pretty simple, if you ignore the direction book. The translation from the German is dreadful. The only thing now is to figure out how "the radio/radio-navigation system must finally be encoded with the car diagnosis, measurement and informantion system VAS 5051/5052 in CD-changer mode". Whatever that means.
