I'm sure there are plenty of members who have read the title and are thinking ooh he's not going to be happy, because they know what the problem is, but for those of you who don't read on and save yourselves a few quid.

I've just recently returned from a 600 mile round trip, 540 or so miles into the trip (Scottish Highland roads with few stopping places etc) and on our way home the kids needed the bathroom.
We stopped at a tiny garage / service area. Getting back into the hot car i decided to leave my drivers door open because the plastic piece in the electric window has finally gone and the car was bloody hot. I started the car and it sounded crap, i didn't know it was our car making the noise because another diesel car had just pulled in but i soon realised something was horribly wrong when he turned his engine off and we were the only with a running engine!

    Oh £$%^!

The car sounded like an old diesel engine had been shoved in the engine bay while we'd been in the bathroom.

There had been NO LOSS OF POWER, NO WARNING LIGHTS FOR TEMPERATURE ETC everything seemed normal except for the racket

With my wife and kids in the car and having been in the car for the last 5hrs or so (My wife is also quite ill with a long term chronic illness) i decided to take the risk and drive the last 60miles watching and listening for signs of things getting worse.

Thankfully we got home and my neighbour is a mechanic so the car is now sat with it's front end off and the problem found.

    What is it?

A very slack timing belt! Only replaced about 18months ago!

    Engine?

OK thankfully but it could've been F$*&£" We're not sure if a bearing or something has gone, TBC, but it's wobbling around like it's ten sizes too big!

So long story now at an end, if your car sounds like that and it's a petrol call the breakdown firm and get towed home so you don't lose your engine.

Now i'm off to find the really useful article in here about fixing the window too

sounds to me like the belt tensioner is knackered. Did you replace it at the same time as the belt?

My sister in law had this happen on her Golf.

Yep but then the engine had to be rebuilt 18months ago because the garage stamped the work as done but didn't do the job!

After me kicking their backsides they rebuilt the engine at their cost. So all should have been done at the same time. Do it trust they did things right the 2nd time.... No

I'm still waiting to hear the £ news....

And the winner is...... Niall76 with knackered belt tensioner not replaced at time of belt change. New part jumped out of old part because the old part was so worn. Apparently VAG have come up with some sort of new part so it doesn't happen again....I don't know details though.

Car now off the road until Monday afternoon and i'll be expecting another bill in the hundreds!

Again i'll say what i said in one of my previous posts, don't touch the Bridgend Group! https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ead.php?t=7761
