I have a Golf TDI (54 plate) and have recently experienced a problem with the cruise control - it just switches itself off. I was wondering if anyone else had a similat problem and if this might be covered by the warranty - it only happens every now and again, so am concerned they mightn not be able to appreciate the fault. any coments welcome, thanks

Its more than likely either your brake pedal switch or clutch pedal switch switching it off.

If it is happening intermittently then you'll just have to put up with it and see if it gets worse, or you could try replacing them both in the hope that that is the problem!

If it is the switches it'll start happening more often as they get even more worn.

My Mk V has been doing this for a few years now. Like you say, it happens very rarely and so up to press, I've been able to live with it. Now that I know about it, when it happens, I know to just pull over, cycle the ignition and it resets itself fine.

I have heard that it is a problem with the stalk on the steering wheel. Apparently replacing this fixes the problem. I'd mention it to your dealer as they may have heard of this before. If it gets any worse for me, I might have a go at doing this myself but at the moment it's not a problem.

I have a problem with mine but it only stays on for a few seconds/minutes then turns off. I had it checked with the computer and it pointed to the stalk. Anybody any idea how difficult it would be to change the stalk?

cheers for the advice guys, much appreciated.
I was wondering if it was the stalk, so this could be possible. I still have a few months of the warranty left so will have a word with the dealer (although most gueries are an uphill struggle). I'm not sure if it would be covered anyway being electrical?
Its probably happening once every couple of trips now, common on a long trip, so want top get it fixed if poss....once it switches off it wont switch on again (unless you're start the engine), seen it switch off a few times when accelerating, very strange.....

I had this problem with my 2005 Mk5 1.9TDI. It turned out it was the switch that was faulty and is, so the dealership said, not unusual.

Have had switched replaced under used car warranty and problems have ceased.
