So, after going across one of those lovely square speedhumps in the road (the ones specifically designed for oilsump destruction) I now have a lovely crack in my sump, and my car is currently hemmoraging its oil into a pan.

    *sigh*

Anyone know what sort of cost I'm looking at for a repair/replacement? I'm told that the gearbox needs to come off as it bolts through the sump?

Anyone know any reputable VW independants in the Bristol/Weston-super-mare area? (for those that know the area, I'm in Nailsea)

Should I just take it to a *******?

Also, anyone had any experience of challenging the council over their frankly dangerous road ornaments?

It takes about two hours to do and is easy; the box does not have to come off. This is very common on the 4-M as the engine and car sit lower, I would recon that 50% of the sumps we change are on 4-M’s and they certainly aren’t 50% of the production of the Golf 4. A new sump from VW is £100.28 and is part number 021 103 601 L in most cases. It is vital that VW sealant D 176 404 A2 is used and in the correct way as too little will result in leaks and too much in a seized engine.

Thanks Crasher, you seem to know EVERYTHING about VW's, you've been a great help!

If it wasn't 180 miles from here to Nottingham I'd have you doing all the work on my cars

The rest of the car seems ok but it did hit the ground pretty hard.... is there anything else I should be checking?
