The non-display of music CD track titles is irritating, but that is common to most other CD players I have come across. Not all music CDs have a title and track list that are machine readable and until we get internet connected head units it will remain a problem.

If you burn MP3 or WMA CDs, you get full folder listing on the RCD510 display and track listing on both the radio and the MFD. You obviously also get 10x as much music on a CD.

Personally, I have it stuffed with 6CD's of MP3's giving me about 60 albums worth. It's annoying that the 510 won't read the MP3 Disc title and you have to remember which disc number is classical and which is rock, but in practice it's a minor flaw. Not finding any problem with speed, but it took me a while to work out which buttons in which order gave the swiftest way through.

Is that on Origional CD or are they your self made compilations??
You may not of chose to 'tag' the cd when burning it.

Original CD's. Sometimes it recognises them, even have a CD which showed all the information but after ejecting and reinserting it no longer showed the info. I tried turning on / off the 'disable title/artist' from the Media Setup but it made no difference.

I guess it's a bug with the radio. I don't suppose Car Stereo manufacturers bring out new software for their devices ?

Teflon, now you have had your RCD 510 a while, can you answer this for me... can you upload (save) music from the SD card into the system? I understand it has a 30gb memory as well as the 6 disc option. I was told that this was possible by the garage, and therefore removes some of the need of the ipod dock (that I understand was not that useful anyway, as it does not give on-screen control or listing details, whereas the SD does).

I have just ordered a new Passat with 510 (non-satnav) and DAB.

Oh, and I plummed for the premium bluetooth too, well 'in for a penny...' I have a nokia handset and it worked well on the demo car I had. how bad can it be?

No, 'fraid not, but it doesn't seem to be much of a handicap with 6 x MP3 CD's worth of music on disc, plus the SD card. The manual seems to be a bit contradictory, it suggests that it can take SD cards up to 4Gb but also says you can't have more than 2Gb! Personally, I've not had more than 1Gb in the slot.

The RCD 510 doesn't have a hard disc to save music or anything else to. I believe the RNS510 Nav unit does have a hard disc, so if it is this you have ordered, you may be in luck. Try a Google search for "RNS510 manual" and you should be able to find a copy or else PM me an EMail address and I will send you one.

Both models also have an Aux input socket (in the armrest), so you can plug in an iPod even if you have to control it the old fashioned way, In Germany, you can specify the multimedia input, which does offer iPod control, so maybe it will make it over here eventually.

Thanks for the prompt reply, a little dissapointed, although not surprised, by the answer. I think you are correct, the sat-nav version of the 510 has the in-built memory, to assist running the programme, whereas the RCD version wouldn't need it. Shame as I thought I would be able to load all my music in to the unit, to remove the need for the ipod.

also a shame you can't get the multi-media link in the UK yet, even Ford offer it now on a Focus!

that said, if I can get it to take a 4gb SD card that would take a greater part of the music in one go. And I believe it reads the track details well using this format.

I have also been in touch with the local specialist sound/custom people, and they are convinced that, as the actual unit will be a shared component (not just between VAG/Skoda but with a major maunfacturer, an appropriate i-pod dock, with full head unit interface and operation, could be fitted (just wont be cheap!) later on.

Can't google a manual for the 510 anywhere... any chance someone has one out there?? I appreciate one will arrive with the car, but it hasn't been delivered yet!

    cheers.

for anyone that is interested, I have just learned that VAG is launching the MDI (multi media interface) that goes in the centre stow area and links up with the exisitng aux leads. this will give full interface ( I believe). its in the states by the look of it. can't find it on ebay yet!

"VW is working on a proper iPod adaptor. It's called the MDI or Media In. Supports USB, Aux and iPod. Comes with a USB cable but you need an iPod cable if you want iPod. Full integration of the iPod. Requires the RNS-510 in order to use it since it fully works with it. It can work with the RCD 510 as well" - go to //townhall(dash)talk(dot)edmunds(dot)com/direct/view/.f160456/19

may be worth discussing with the main agent to order in... not sure whether it would also require any other interface parts at the stereo end but claims to run on both 510 models.

there is also some good youtube footage of the 510 unit in use with SD card option. it does give full on-screen detail and maps this to the 'Highline' dash display too. clever.
