    Hi, newbie here!

    I have a '97 mk3 GTi 16v. ABF.

Recently, and getting progressively worse, I have had problems selecting 5th gear. I try to select 5th, but it slips into 3rd.

The problem can strike at any time, meaning I have to drive everywhere in 4th. All the other gears are fine. Other times, no problems at all!

It's driving me crazy, and I need some assistance. Please help.

    Thanks in advance.

At the top of the selector, on top of the gearbox, there is a small metal plate with a bolt going through it. The nut had loosened itself, and simply needed tightening. If its the same problem, make sure the nut sits dead centre in the slot, and tighten.

My gearbox no longer feels like I'm stirring soup! Nice crisp changes are back, and no issues now with 5th!. It's even sorted out the timeless 'select 2nd before 1st' problem that all mk3's seem to suffer from.

I hope its the same fix for yours.

Its there, in plain view, above the selector arm. 13mm did the trick.

I'm not that clued up about car mechanics, did you do this Internally or get the car up on ramps and do it from underneath the car ?

Just open the bonnet, and look down to the right. The nut is circled. Hope that helps.
