hello folks, im new to passat ownership and liking the car a lot 1.8s 20v found one with only 17 thousand miles, smooth quiet and fairly economical, one big prob though, no speakers fitted in the rear, cd unit was fitted at the garage when i bought that car as it was a cassette player fitted originally, great sound from the front but id like to have the sound balanced to the rear, anyone know if the wires for the rear speakers are hidden away as i took off the plastic speaker grille and couldnt see, feel any not worried about the tweeter wiring as a set of two way speakers would do the same job of sending sound to the rear i hope, looking in the door pillar gaiters there are purple wires which i was told could be speaker wires, i hope its true as i dont want to rip up carpets etc running wires to the rear, any help would be appreciated

    thanks , george.

98 passat with only 17000 miles ??? Smells fishy as these cars are verry easy to clock ! There is no wiring that goes to the back speakers as i have checked on my cousins 97 passat 1.6 petrol. His car has no rear speakers as well. Go to a Car alarm shop and they will be able to fit/adapt the rear speakers and fit a new wiring loom, as its quite easy, just four wires to run... Hope this helps.

thanks adamss24 cant think of any car security fitting places near here, but i do have a garage owner i trust, will need to ask him about wiring and routing the cables back to the rear doors, just seems a lot of work for a simple job lol,, i did a lot of checking on the car before buying, 1 owner, elderly gentleman, hardly used it took ill and can no longer drive, car is as new, and i hope to keep it that way as i hardly do any mileage myself, thanks for replying and ill let you and folks know how i get on with the speakers as im sure im not the only one to want sound in the rear and be able to balance it
    thanks, george

finally got the speakers and cable looks not to difficult to get the cable from the rear to the cd player just a quick dumb question though, where do the spealer cables connect to the back of the player as it all seems to be block connectors between the player and the original vw wiring any help would be appreciated

    thanks , george.

heya new to vw, had the speaker grilles off and looked inside without taking the door panels off, only wiring i can see/feel have no loose ends for speaker connections,, and have been told by someone else that thier passat ,same year , had the same lack of speaker wires too, the actuall speaker connections in the door dont pose a problem , just the connections to the rear of the player as theyre all taken up by block connectors, does it involve taking these connectors appart and trying to fit the ends of the speaker cables in somehow?

    thanks , george.

unfortunately yes it does mean you have to take the block's apart.....hayne's book will have colour's/ diagram for radio...or you could use the scotch lock connector's but they dont alway's make connection with the thinner speaker cable..
sorry i cant be off more help

heya minty, yeah i thought that when i bought it lol, then found out why the front rear fader wouldnt work, just fake plastic speaker grilles fitted to the rear, how cheap can you get? not even a source on the wiring loom to plug in speakers ive just bought, car was bog standard when i bought it too with just 17k on it and the previous owner certainly didnt take them out ,if they ever were fitted lol ,as it didnt even have a cd player fitted just radio cassette, really pleased with the car though, even without rear speakers 98 1.8 20v as new condition paid £2600, so hoping it will last a good few years lol

    thanks, george

well, put the car into the garage to get the speakers fitted, the gut who fitted them who said hed done this jobs before has fitted the speakers to the metal plate inside the door with pop rivets and still hasnt got them to work yet lol, even had the wiring wrong, till the boss seen it, so it seems i need adaptor plates for fitting them in the door panels as they are about 4" back from the inside of the panneling and the one that works is very muted in volume, can even see the puddle light behind the grille that covers the speaker hole in the panel, anyone else heard of the speaker being attached to the steel panel inside the door? as at the mo only one works and they want me to take it back to fix it later? ive ordered the adaptors for the speakers but will need to un rivet the speakers to fit them now lol, so much hassle for a simple job

    thanks , george.
