A4 cooling fan & air con

Hello All,

Hope you can help.


My 2000 A4 1.8 has just been fitted with a new water pump.

When home we noticed the cooling fan was running fast and the air con didnt work. The cooling fan runs very fast even when the engine is cold.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this might be ? the garage hasent been very helpful.

May have a completely different system on the 1.8, but I've just been through this on my TDI Passat.

Well the air con is fixed. Seems the garage neglected to connect a wire.


Still doesnt solve the fan on constant tho. Any ideas ?

I would check the coolant temp sender and the maxi fuse and resitor for the slow speed fan

The fan will be on as long as the aircon is on, it will however be in slow speed mode.It wont flick to high peed mode unless the engine gets really warm

Quick update.

The aircon is not on, but the fan still runs at what can only be described as turbo speed.

We took it back to the garage and they have now said they will send it to Audi for a diagnostic test. seems local garages don't have full diagnostic methods.

I'm hoping Audi will say yes, it was the garages fault and it will be fixed for free but I'm nervous, without explaining that all was well when it went in how can I possibly win.

I'd love any suggestions .

Does the A4have a radiator fan relay ? I did find a vague referance to this on a web page but my problem seems almost obscure.
