    anyone here into mobile phones?

my n95 is up for renewal soon and i fancy a complete change.

i would love an iphone 3G, because now they have opened up the OS to 3rd party programs, and the gps support means i can replace the tomtom i currently have on my N95. my problem is that i would have to get one sim free from somewhere as im on vodafone and dont want to switch. this would cost a fortune. camera is ony 2mp

similarly the new Samsung i900 "iphone rival" looks pretty sweet but only just out (or soon to be out anyway...) so once again will be expensive, but at least i could probably get it subsidised. also, its windows mobile, so i could stick with tomtom, and there is many apps available.

i really fancy the touchscreen route. but without losing most of the features i am used to with my n95. any recommendations?

I've currently got one one of these little chaps:

It's a really good phone/Walkman & tiny. It's a bit bashed & battered now so time for an upgrade, I was thinking of going for an N95. They good then? As for the touch screen you mention, the fella in the shop when I got the W880i didn't recommend it. I was after one they had, I can't remember what it was, but he said when it ws cold the screen has difficulty in picking up the touch. It must sense heat I suppose & cold fingers aren't warm enough?!
But that was about a year ago now, so they may well be very different now, just something to bear in mind & make sure that's not the case now.

the N95 is a great phone, i would thoroughly recommend it, and if i cant get anything "different" enough to warrant upgrading to, then i will quite happily keep hold of mine.

i doubt i will bother getting the N96, as the upgraded features would be lost on my phone usage. (tbh most of the N95 goes unused). i think im finally getting bored with symbian series 60, after 5 handsets running the OS (6600, 6260, n80, n73, n95) and fancy a change. however if nokia came out with a touchscreen N series, then would definitely be interested.

The iphone is brilliant and yes the camera is 2meg but its very clear, I thought it was a gimmick till i used my friends and is by far the best peice of kit i have ever got. I work in london and if i get lost just ping up the map etc. No other touch screen is as easy to use for all the functions

do you have the 2g or 3g version?

if 2g, do you have to access wifi to get the map info?

I have the 2g and it works on edge (which is slower than 3g). However i have a subscribed package which gives me free access to the O2 cloud so it get Wifi virtually all over london (A tip to know is the older phones now have an upgrade software to 2.0 which allows third party software as well) The only differences between the phones are:

The earphone Jack is now flush
    It runs on 3G
And it uses a more functional GPS system

yeah, its those three points that make me want the 3G version. especially the GPS for satnav.

i suspect i may end up with the samsung and windows mobile due to the initial outlay of a sim free iphone. cool phone tho, especially now v2 is here and the third party developers can release apps for it. that was the dealbreaker for me when i got my n95, as there are a few add ons that i love on my n95.

Just try one and honestly you will be sold, go to O2 the new ones are much cheaper (Free on £45:00 per month contract) and transfer your number, there is nothing that can touch it, its more a mini Mac that can make phone calls than a phone

I don't think I like the idea of GPS/ sat nav in a phone, Mrs. Dudey'll figure out a way to track me!!
