    I have a MK.3 8v Gti Golf.

Basically, My coolant seems to completely dissappear a couple of weeks after filling it right up. Last time I filled it up I did it with normal water and not a mix of anti freeze just to temp. top it up, but I doubt this has had an effect.

Has anyone else heard of this problem or could give me an insight as to what the problem might be. My worst worry is that its the head gasket but the engine is running smooth and I havent seen any white smoke. Also there are no puddles under the car so where is the water going??

Any suggestions will be greatlyappreciated. Cheers.

Check the plasctic head to hose adapters on the front of the engine (should have some temp sensors in them) and on the R/H side of the head where the thermostate lives. They are made of re-cycled plastic, they crack and allows the water to dribble out. It doesn't always leave a puddle on the floor as it evaporates.
Hope this is of some help.
    regards Boardboy.

Check in the oil filler cap to make sure the is no mayonaise like goo.

ooh that sounds like a good one. I've heard of this recycled adaptor. I'll have a look in the light tomorrow. I'll need to fill it up too.

I'll also check under the oil filler like you say, that should show me if there is any water getting into the head. I mean if taht amount of water is getting into my head I would really expect to feel loss in power. Engine is so smooth though.
