I have exactly the same problem with my '98 variant. Except that pressing twice won't help, as the lock goes down and then jumps up always. The problem has been there for years I think, and they tried to fix it in the service serveral times, but sooner or later the problem comes back. Sometimes it works like a charm for a few days but now it's been like that for a while.

Anybody know how to fix this? It's really annoying to go close it manually every time you leave your car.

Under the passenger side carpet the is the central convieniance ecu, Check the connections are clean and not corroded,it is dry and the wiring going to it looks ok. They normally get full of water because of the drain grommets getting bocked under the scuttle (the bit under the wipers) and cause all sorts of faults like this.
