    Hi

Just bought a 2005 Polo Twist 1.4TDi for my wife. She has been used to remote locking so I was thinking of upgrading. I have looked through posts on this part of the forum and on the how to section and was surprised not to find any mention.

    Anyone done this upgrade?
    Is the upgrade easy?
Are genuine parts available (and at what sort of cost) from ********?

I have looked on ebay and saw this listed as an upgrade kit costing £17.50 plus £4.95 postage
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...id=p2759.l1259
I realise this is a generic kit and was wondering how good it was and how well it would link into VW wiring loom.

I considered this before on my son's 2001 Golf and spoke to an auto spark who said, at that time, he thought cheap upgrade kits didn't work well with the VW central locking system.

    Thanks in advance

    Alan

I got my kit off Ebay for £20 including postage similar to the one you are looking at on Ebay. There is Nothing wrong with the cheap kits and they work well when u know what to do lol I cant remember the exact colouring of the wire I used. But I'll tell u how I found it. I took a test lamp connected it to the cars body/earth. On the switch panel on the drivers door, is a switch for lock/unlock. (3 wires going to it) One of the wires is the one u use. Use the testlamp on each of the three wires one of them will lock the car when earthed with the test lamp. You must Use a test lamp, because there is la chance of doing damage if you juuse only a wire to earth. On the kit you will use the negative pulse system. there will be 2 wires one for lock and unlock. connect the 'lock' wire to the wire u found on the drivers door switch (which locks, when earthed with the testlamp) The other wire for 'unlock' needs to have a resistor soldered on, unsulated and then connected to the wire on the drivers door switch. The central locking will now lock and unlock with the remote. I cant remember what resistor I used, but I will check and post it on forum on my post. Hope this helps.

The resistor I used is colour banded as follows :
Blue, Grey, Brown and Gold, which is 680 Ohms +/- 5%.
    Hope this Helps

I forgot to mention I kept all the wiring within the drivers door and used a positive power supply from the main door harness plugs. (Use test lamp to find positive power Ignition in the off position) The new remote module fits perfectly just under the window switches behind the door panel/trim.

    Take care

I got my kit from ebay (used an ie auction, paid in Euros so costing about £16). Instructions clear enough on how to wire for negative trigger.
Went into Maplins today and spoke to the guy at the components counter. He looked out the capacitor described and while checking the price (a whopping 15pence - took 2) I was saying what it was for. He reckoned this may not be powerful enough to survive in an automotive environment - unless it was only being used for a very low power use as a trigger and not to directly operate the actuators/motors etc. He suggested it may require more powerful capacitor ( http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=H0.1&DOY=27m7 - 10W W/W 1k ) at an even more costly 40 pence. I have taken both meantime as it would cost a lot more for fuel to go back for a different one.
Reading your entry and the diagrams in the kit I believe the standard resistor would be the right one as it is described as a negative trigger. Can you confirm that you used the standard 15 pence capacitor to good effect as I don't fancy frying electrics. I am happy to turn my hand to most things but the finer points of resistors/capacitors and the likes escape me.
    Thanks again
    Alan
