Anyway, if you manage to introduce a tradition that is being adopted by a whole nation, it must mean that you have some serious presence there so the American bloodline must have a serious Dutch heritage...

    That could explain a lot...

There was a company (forgot their ame) that was offering special insurance and legal assistance for tailgaters... (no, this is not a typo). Even more ridiculous than that was a certain town in the Netherlands (forgot which one) where the local authorities had introduced a new law stating that it was prohibited for dogs to bark...

I'm not joking... these reports were really on the radio... And it wasn't an April fools day joke either... Unless in the Netherlands April fools day is on the 22nd of May...
I was on the way home a few years ago in Wiltshire when I heard the news that the Police now have extra powers which allowed them to enter your home and fine your cat for being too fat! I kid not!

BBC Radio Wiltshire asked what pets you had and what you would fine them for as a sort of listenener survey.

I phoned in and said that I had a pet pig.

They asked what I would fine him for.

I said that I would fine him for hiding in a van and unfairly accusing people of speeding.

He laughed himself silly but refused to read it out on air.

I don't mind being pulled over for speeding by proper police (not those asses in Scamera partnerships). I have twice and did acquire six points. It is humbling but useful. Cameras are just another stupid tax on the motorist

Yet more than half of the idiots on the road slow down at the camera, boot their car to 90mph until they reach the next camera and then stand hard on the brakes.

You can't introduce such a system on the motorways here before you had a national TV campaign educating people about the meaning of the word "average" first...

I couldn't agree more Desertfish, I saw that exact thing happen a couple of weeks ago, this lad in a Clio tore past me and just before the camera, locked it up and trundled through, only to boot it out past the camera and 2 miles farther on, he did exactly the same bless him.
I guess he'll never know why he got a ticket
Why would the government bother to spend millions on a TV campaign to educate people to understand what average speed really means?
It will cost them millions to do and will ultimately curtail the revenue collected.
They've not the slighest interest in road safety, if they did there would be a speed camera outside every school, but where are they?
They are on dual carraigeways which strangely have a 50mph limit for no other reason than to catch out those who are partially distracted for a couple of seconds.
I would have more respect for governments if they just said the truth, we aim to extract as much revenue as we can from you, and have no interest in anything else.
I may not agree with such a position but would have respect for their honesty, but instead they try to justify cameras for our safety and have Safety camera partnerships , all very warm and fuzzy but without any substance at all.
I think all Safety camera partnerships should be abolished and safety cameras repositioned in proper locations like schools and urban areas not dual carriageways.
The money saved could be used to fund more traffic officers to prosecute tailgaters and undertakers, they are the real menace on our roads, not speed per se.
