Regarding the ongoing problem with the turbo in my diesel Golf can anyone provide instructions on changing the Turbo unit? Parts that I will need to get hold of, any special tools required and the like is it a DIY job, I am quite handy with the old spanners?

I did the turbo on mine - a TDi 150 PD. The thing that made it difficult was that the turbo on that model and the exhaust manifold are one piece. It may be different on yours. I didn't get any other spare parts. Some say replace the oil return pipe (short, flexible one at the bottom) but I didn't bother.

Access from underneath isn't too bad and it is improved if you separate the driveshaft which is held together by 6 star bolts. You won't get any oil leak by doing so. Pull the wheel to one side.

The biggest problem I had was with the pipe clips. Make sure you've got some good swan-neck pliers and do not totally remove the clips or they'll contract and then be really difficult to open wide enough to get back on. Leave them on the metal pipes. Jubilee clips may be the way ahead?
