On a B5 Passat with a 130TDI PD engine - first of all noticed a bit of a dripping sound, then found water pouring out the bottom of the undertray. Further investigation led to the battery compartment at the bottom of the windscreen had turned into a mobile swimming pool as the drain hole was blocked. This was full with water. Amazingly the ECU seems OK.

What is strange - by accident pulled the dip stick out - it has a very thick grey sludge on it and is way above the max mark. Checked the oil filler cap, plenty of salad cream. The oil dipped good about 2 weeks ago, the water level is still good - so is this coincidental or at all related to the above blockage of the water drainage problem? I just can't see how water can enter the engine from there.

I'm just about to compression test it and go from there.

The two holes in the bottom of the plenum chamber can block, and with all the rain recently as you have found it fills with water.

This can get into the brake servo and then it is possible for it to go down the vacuum servo line. From there it goes into the vacuum pump and into the oil.

I would also check your foot wells for water. It will ( just search for footwell+water on this forum) get into the ventilation system and can cause mayhem with the electrics.

Not good news I am afraid.

i bought that car off the guy who started the thread you wouldent beleave the damage that was done when i opened up the engine.

it was easier for me to fit a 2nd hand engine and turbo

if the cars still runing ok at the moment dont drive it! drain the oil flush the system clean the drains out and hope for the best.
it would be also worth you trying to drain the servo to as that will be full of water

the water in the oil will blow the turbo eventually
and also bugger up the servo

the guy i bought the car off in the mentioned thread had a quote from vw for over £2000 to repair it!

Ah, I thought it was more than just a coincidence. The car does only mainly get used for short journies durign the week, but gets a longer run out at the weekends, but when the oil was checked a couple of weeks ago there was no sign of the condensation build up. Luckily the carpets are all dry, and the ECU is good. Obviously the car isn't being driven with oil in that state! The other drain hole below the servo was blocked as well, now cleared. I guess it's easy enough to remove the servo and drain / dry it?

Will just flush the engine through and see how it is after..

    Hi Alfa145

I am having the exact same problem with my car - what did you have done to yours? and is it now fixed?

Any advice would be helpful as i don't want to spend money on things that may not be causing the problem.

    Thanks

Thanks Minty - i've already read that thread.

My car is with the VW dealer at the moment - i am trying to get them to put things right (plenum chamber full of water, brakes failed, sludge in engine).

They have diagnosed water contamination in the servo, but want to charge me 4 hours of labour (over £400) just to check the engine!!! I'm saying its all related.........and the saga continues!!!

Just curious to know what other people did re: sludge in engine.
