  1. Engine Oil recommendation

Can anyone tell me what the best engine oil is for my car? 1.9TDI diesel engine..... light came on today and the manual states:

VW 506 01 - Oil for long life service
VW 505 01 - Multi Grade high lubricity oils

Bit confused....does anyone just use Castrol ?

    Thanks

Righty, what type of service regime are you on? Either fixed interval (fixed miles and fixed date, upto 10k miles or 1 year), or LongLife variable service (upto 20k miles or 2 years)?

You must ONLY use an oil which is approved for your Pumpe Duse (PD or unit injector), otherwise SERIOUS engine damage will occur. Do not use Mobil 1, as these have never been tested by VW (dispite the claim on the bottle of Mobil 1 that it "meets" the VW standards).

Take a look at the following thread https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ead.php?t=1482, have a detailed look at my reply - post #12 - be careful of the very generic statements from "oilman" - quite simply, as per your manual, you MUST buy an oil which has either VW 505.01, or 506.01 on the bottle, anything else is completely irrelevant!

Yebut - his advice isn't always correct, and his prices are no cheaper than *********. And why PM, what's wrong with posting the info here on the forum, so everyone can see the answers.

If the light is on GET SOME OIL IN NOW! Doing damage to the engine if you run it too low. Chuck any old stuff in, in the short run. However, the best top up oil to carry around in a 1 litre pot is 505.01 stuff. It's designed for the 10k service interval, and 506 stuff is for longer service intervals. I use 505.01 and change my oil/filter every 7k, also carry a 1 litre pot in the boot as my turbo has a very slight oil leak from one of the feed pipes - so small it bearly affects the levels, but it tends to need a bit of a top-up halfway through between services.

From the information that I have:

505.01 is the same as 5W/40 for the standard service life
    On the longlife schedule: 0W/30

I'm sure Castrol will have equivilent oils but if unsure then just go to your local VW dealer (or independant) and buy some from the service department.

    Regards

I would approach VW dealers with a little caution. I have personaly repeatedly experienced problems with my own main *******, and other no-so-local main ********, trying to tell me to put the wrong oil into both my S4 and my GTI. One dealer even admitted to engine failures from using the wrong oil, and that VW refused the Warranty repair because of the wrong oil! Another area of concern is the actual contracted supply of oil to the dealer - some use Castrol, some use Shell, some use Fuchs, and some use Mobil. The first three are all OK, because they do actually have the specific VW approved oils in their respective ranges. Those dealers who use Mobil could seriously be in the $hit, because no Mobil oil has ever been submitted to VW (and therefore tested, and subsequently approved) for either Pumpe Duse unit injector turbo diesels, or any LongLife specifications!

If the OP advises the forum which regime his car is on, then I can post a list of the relevant VW approved oils.

Ive only had the car since September 2006, and they told me that the car had been fully serviced prior to me buying it....never had a deisel before so was under the (wrong) impression that you dont top up regularly.....

The last service was done in May 2006 officially, (stamped) and no doubt the levels were checked again in Spetember when I bought it.

I would assume that I have a choice of service intervals? or can someone recommend what service interval I should use as I mainly use the car for motorway driving and local school runs.

    Thanks

Just had a look at the service book.... it was last serviced on 15/5/06 with 50,223 miles on the clock. Ive had the car 4 months and have done 3500 miles thus far.

The stamps have been put on the LongLife Service section......

sorry to 'hijack' this thread and please dont ignore the initial question but im trying to clear up a bit of confusion.... you have reccomended the type of oil etc, so supposing you walk into *********, am i going to be able to get the diesel oil i need from there or am i going to have to visit a car spares supplier?
