    I'm a new owner of a B6 A4 quattro 3.0 V6 MY03 and want some advice on oil.

Its on the variable service intervals but I want to service it more frequently and the castro edge 5w30 is too expensive to change every 6 months.

Is it ok to use mobil1 0w40 which is 60% cheaper but I will change it every 6 months?

    Thanks
    Matt

Welcome to the forum. Did you do a search, and find the Oil labelling explained "sticky" thread https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ead.php?t=1482, in the Maintenance, Problems & Misc Parts Questions of the technical section?? Make sure you read the full thread, including my final response!

Why, you want to go from two years to six months????? Now I could possibly understand that reason if you had a heavilly modified, highly stressed turbo engine, and caned the pants off your motor, but the 3.0 V6 lump is in quite a mild state of tune, and will easily handle LongLife servicing, providing you stick to certain driving requirements, otherwise, a 12 month regime is perfectly acceptable.

The Castrol EDGE 5w30 is the proper stuff, and was developed in partnership with VAG for their sole use. Any non 503.00 or 504.00 oil will simply not be good enough, even for 6monthly changes!

ABSOLUTELY NOT - Mobil 1 0w40 has never been tested by VAG, and therefore has no VAG approval. Read the bottle carefully, and you will see a false and unlawful claim!

How about this you say castro edge 5w30 is 60% more expensive so why don`t you change every 12 months using the oil that was intended therefore weighing out the cost.

I dont understand why folk buy such elaborate motor cars only to then penny pinch

You look after that car matt and the car will look after you and be a pride to own.

    Enjoy the forum

Thanks for the advice, I've since had the car serviced and used Castrol Edge 5w30 even though I think it is priced for someone who buys "a 30k motor car"

I won't be servicing it every 2 years but probably yearly so i thought it might be a waste of money to use the long life oil.

I've used mobil 1 in other high performance cars i've owned and could buy it at half the price of the approved juice, that was my only gripe.

    Anyway thanks for the advice
